Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster's pitching came within one out of its first shutout of the season on Tuesday evening.

The Long Island Ducks came within a foot of tying the score.

LeDarious Clark made a leaping catch on the warning track to rob L.J. Mazzilli of a game tying hit to preserve a 3-1 victory for the Barnstormers, their sixth win in the last eight games.

Lancaster scored its three runs in one inning and was shut out on three hits otherwise. In the bottom of the third, Caleb Gindl belted a one-out double to left. He took third on a fly out by Blake Allemand and scored on a grounder to second by Blake Gailen. Alejandro De Aza extended the inning with a double to the gap in right center and strode home on a ground single into right by Trayvon Robinson. Robinson stole second and scored when Kelly Dugan dropped a double into the left field corner.

Zach Smith (1-1) pitched a feisty five innings in his third professional start. The right-hander yielded four hits, all singles while walking five and striking out four. He stared down runners at the corners in the first inning, getting newcomer Chris Shaw to bounce into a 2-6-3 double play. In the third, the Texas fanned Mazzilli and Shaw with two runners aboard. Then, in the fourth, Smith induced an infield pop up by Vladimir Frias after walking the bases loaded.

Garrett Granitz and Donald Goodson dealt a scoreless inning apiece. Gabriel Moya worked the eighth and survived a one-out walk to Shaw.

Scott Shuman entered in the ninth. The Lancaster closer struck out Sal Giardina before issuing two walks on nine pitches to pinch hitter Daniel Fields and Jesse Berardi. Frias rapped a grounder to first on which Dugan made a low throw to second that Cleuluis Rondon could not dig out of the dirt. A bases loaded grounder by Chris Lombardozzi scored one and brought up Mazzilli with the tying runs in scoring position. His deep fly ball, and the Long Island chances, died in Clark's glove as Shuman notched his 13th save.

The series continues on Wednesday at 6:30 on Wiener Wednesday. Lancaster will send Augie Sylk (2-4) to the mound against brand new left-hander Dalton Oates (0-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel at 6:25.

NOTES: Gindl doubled and tripled to extend his league leading total of extra base hits to 42 and total bases to 169...Robinson is 11-for-11 in stolen bases...The Barnstormers have won six of their last eight to hold a one-game lead over Southern Maryland in the North...It was the second time on the season that Lancaster has allowed only an unearned run.
