Barnstormers blanked by Brownlie

Bobby Brownlie fired a complete-game, five-hit shutout on Tuesday evening as the Newark Bears captured a 5-0 decision from the Barnstormers in the opener of a three-game set at Bears and Eagles Stadium in Newark, ending Lancaster's winning streak at three.

Brownlie (2-0) scattered the five hits, walked one and struck out eight in becoming only the sixth pitcher to go the distance and whitewash the Barnstormers in franchise history. He allowed only one runner as far as third base when Bryan Sabatella singled to left to open the fifth and swiped both second and third.

Two of Lancaster's hits were doubles. Ryan Mulhern extended a mild hitting streak to five games with a leadoff two-bagger over the head of Charlton Jimerson in the second. Danny Bravo sliced a double into the left field corner with one out in the ninth.

Trey Hodges (0-3) allowed a two-run homer to Jay Gibbons, the lefty slugger's third of the season, in the first inning then settled down to keep the Barnstormers in the game. Hodges allowed only one more tally, on two walks, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout in the fifth inning.

Newark greeted Ross Peeples with three singles in the seventh before Lancaster switched to Joe D'Alessandro. Salomon Manriquez delivered Rob Mackowiak with a ground ball to second, and reached when the grounder was fumbled by Bravo. D'Alessandro froze the Bears from there in the seventh but surrendered another run on a Jimerson homer in the eighth for the final margin.

The Barnstormers play two more in Newark before heading home to take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for a three-game weekend series with fireworks following the games on Friday and Saturday evenings.

NOTES: Opponents played their sixth consecutive errorless game...Sabatella has stolen five bases in the last three games, including second and third in the same inning twice...Bravo has batted safely in eight of nine games (11-for-32, .344)...Lancaster will start Tom Cochran (2-0) on Wednesday against Shawn Chacon (0-0)...Game time is 6:05.
