Barnstormers Benefit From Errors
Blake Gailen drove in three runs, and the Lancaster Barnstormers benefitted from four Road Warriors errors en route to a 6-3 victory Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win was Lancaster's seventh straight at home and kept the club four games ahead of Sugar Land in the Freedom Division.
Gailen knocked in the game's first run with a ground ball to the right side, plating Rico Noel who had singled and stolen two bases. In the fourth, the Lancaster right fielder drilled a single into center, following two walks and a fielding error, staking the Barnstormers to a 6-2 advantage.
The other offense was built on Road Warriors fielding miscues. In the second, Nate Coronado reached on a bobble by shortstop Osvaldo Martinez, advanced on two infield outs and scored when catcher Isaac Wenrich bounced a throw to first on a dribbler up the third base line by Darian Sandford.
Two more runs crossed the plate in the third. Gailen and Ryan Casteel picked up singles off lefty Brandon Bargas (0-3) with one out. Gailen took third on a wild pitch and scored on a force play grounder by Joey Terdoslavich. Trayvon Robinson hit another squibber between the mound and home plate. Bargas made a high throw to first, and Terdoslavich scampered all the way home.
Altogether, only three of the six runs off Bargas were earned.
Meanwhile, Melvin Rodriguez-Ortiz did all the damage against Lancaster starter Jonathan Albaladejo 95-2). The Road Warriors second baseman delivered Jorge Fernandez-Diaz with a sacrifice fly to left in the second. In the fourth, he doubled inside the first base bag, again bringing Fernandez-Diaz home, but Albaladejo wriggled out of a second-and-third, nobody out jam from there.
Rodriguez-Ortiz capped the scoring in the sixth with a home run onto the Haller picnic deck in right field.
The Barnstormers had a scare in the eighth inning when Fernandez-Diaz walked against Matt Marksberry, and Alberto Silverio banged a single into left center. Both moved up on a wild pitch. Marksberry settled down and fanned three left-handed batters in succession to turn the game over to Matt Reynolds for the ninth.
The lefty closed out the game with three straight outs after Matt Hibbert reached on a dropped third strike. Reynolds earned his tenth save.
Lancaster wraps up the series on Sunday afternoon with Nate Reed (5-0) slated to start against Road Warriors right-hander Felix Baez (1-5). It is a Domino's Pizza Family Fun Day at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Fans may tune into Blue Ridge Cable 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 1:00.
NOTES: The Barnstormers have won 16 of their last 18 at home...Casteel has hit safely in nine straight games...Terdoslavich lost a nine-game streak...Lancaster stole four bases on the night and has swiped 87 in 39 games this season...Gailen has driven home 32 runs on the year, pulling to within one of Sugar Land's Courtney Hawkins.
