Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers have finalized their coaching staff for the 2023 season, General Manager Juli Pettit announced today.
Returning for his second year as Head Coach of the Iowa Barnstormers, Dave Mogensen brings a multitude of coaching experience on all levels to the organization. Mogensen joined the Iowa Barnstormers with a clear understanding of what the organization is looking to achieve both on and off the field. After a successful first season with the organization, leading the team to the playoffs and showcasing a commitment to the Des Moines community, Coach Mogensen signed an extension with the team through 2024.
Looking to build on the momentum from 2022, Coach Mogensen has once again put together a coaching staff that shares the same excitement and ambition to build a championship team in Des Moines, Iowa. With a strong foundation in place, the 2023 coaching staff includes familiar faces who are ready to return to Des Moines and get back to work.
Jermaine Hampton is returning to the Iowa Barnstormers as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. Coach Hampton brings experience as both a coach and a player. After a successful collegiate career, Hampton spent three seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts.
"As soon as the season ended, priority number one was getting Jermaine back as our Defensive Coordinator," said Head Coach Mogensen. "He had a lot of other teams interested in him, but when he did not receive any Head Coach offers we were able to get him back here in Iowa. Jermaine has such a unique perspective, he went the undrafted route and carved out an NFL career, then was able to have a lot of success with the indoor game. He understands the path our players are walking as well as anyone."
Having successfully carved a path similar to the one many indoor football athletes are looking to take, Coach Hampton is able to offer a unique perspective and mindset in his coaching.
"Jermaine is one of the greatest football minds I've ever been around," Head Coach Mogensen said. "He can understand the nuances of the game so well, there is nothing that can happen that Jermaine hasn't seen before. Jermaine and I work very well together, he is on a path to be a great head coach and I am happy to have him continue on that journey with another stop here with the Barnstormers. Fans can expect to see a Jermaine Hampton coaches defense to continue to be fast paced, versatile, and energetic. The return of defensive captain Ian McBorrough will allow our defense to pick up and go fast this training camp."
Jack Bootsmiller is also returning to the Iowa Barnstormers as Special Teams Coordinator and Offensive/Defensive Line Coach. Starting out as a football staff intern in 2022, the Simpson College graduate quickly earned a coaching title taking over as Defensive Line Coach. Coach Bootsmiller returns for the 2023 season as a full time member of the Barnstormers coaching staff taking on more responsibility.
"Jack started with us last year as intern, but it became apparent nearly immediately that he needed more responsibilities as he was a major asset to us. That led me to giving Jack the full defensive line duties in 2022," said Head Coach Mogensen. "He exceled in that role and then literally as soon as the season ended left for a GA role with the University of West Alabama. As we progressed through the 2023 coaching staff, the opportunity to open discussion with Jack about coming back to both work in the front office and take on a larger coaching role. Jack has a tremendous ability to translate what is necessary for our players to find success, as a young coach last year he quickly grabbed the respect of our veteran players and helped cultivate great seasons from numerous rookies. Jack is a tremendous asset to our team and organization as a whole and I couldn't be happier to have him back in 2023."
With Coach Mogensen, Coach Hampton, and Coach Bootsmiller at the helm, the coaching staff is not complete without the support staff. Joining them for the 2023 season will be:
Michael Kirby, Equipment Manager and Video Assistant
Logan Foster, Director of Player Personnel
Mark McCormick, Special Assistant to the Head Coach
Dave Auwerda, Offensive Data Analyst
Jim Knowles, Defensive Data Analyst
Michael Marlier, Special Teams Data Analyst
Jaime Saucedo, Coaching Intern
"This is a tough industry to maintain continuity from coaching staff. Year in and year out guys come and go due to various reasons, for ust o bring back Coach Hampton and Coach Boots, along with Mac, Dave, and Logan is a huge positive for our team as a whole," said Coach Mogensen. "We each have a better understanding of how our minds work which allows us to think in unison more. Our 2023 coaching staff brings together that big core from 2022 along with a group of guys from various backgrounds who offer very unique perspectives, all with singular focus of servant leadership to our guys."
With the coaching staff in place, the Iowa Barnstormers are ready to open the 2023 Training Camp.
"This off-season went so fast from about September to January and now it's just been dragging along," said Head Coach Mogensen. "With Training Camp finally on the horizon, I am so excited to get our guys in town and start working toward our 2023 season goals. This coaching staff pushes each other with positive, but streamlined, banter throughout off-season meetings and chats and I can't wait to put into action the tweaks we have been working on."
