Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers have signed left-hander Derrick Loop and right-hander Robert Hinton to contracts for the 2013 season, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Loop, 29, opened the 2010 season with the Camden Riversharks and appeared in 33 games, all in relief. The lefty wove a 1.72 ERA over 31.1 innings of work while allowing only 22 hits and striking out 40. He was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies organization and compiled an 8-5 record with a 2.39 ERA over 59 appearances during the next season and a half, pitching from Class A to Class AAA.
He went to the Dodgers organization last year and finished the season with an 11-4 mark and 4.88 ERA, making 13 starts and 21 relief appearances for Class AAA Albuquerque.
Loop was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians in 2006 out of Cal State-Los Angeles. Over his seven professional seasons, he has gone 41-20 with a 3.10 ERA in 511.1 innings.
"(Loop's) numbers speak for themselves," said Hobson. "He is really tough on lefties and will be a good bullpen guy for us."
Hinton, 28, signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2003 draft and began his professional career the following year. He spent eight years in the Brewers system, splitting the last three between Class AA Huntsville and Class AAA Nashville. The Florida native saved 14 games for Class A West Virginia in 2005 while striking out 77 batters in 74.2 innings.
In 2011, his final season with the Milwaukee system, Hinton posted a combined 2.43 ERA in 43 appearances at Huntsville and Nashville.
Last year, the right-hander went to the Baltimore Orioles Class AA affiliate in Bowie, MD. He was 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 41 games for the Baysox, striking out 60 batters in 59.1 innings. He walked only 14.
"If you look at Hinton's numbers, you wonder why he doesn't have a job," said Hobson. "He's going to be a really good guy to have in the back end of the bullpen."
First baseman Curt Smith, who has starred for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, has been signed by the Minnesota Twins and subsequently placed on the inactive list by the Barnstormers.
With the moves, the Barnstormers now have 15 players under contract for the 2013 campaign.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their ninth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
