Barnstormers Add Size with Latest Signings

DES MOINES - For the second time this week, the Iowa Barnstormers looked to the University of Virginia to find their latest prospect. Iowa signed rookie Linebacker Darnell Carter last Thursday and followed that up today by agreeing to terms with rookie Offensive Lineman and fellow Cavalier, BJ Cabbell.
Cabbell (6-6, 305) was a four year standout for the Cavaliers from 2007-2010. Last season as a senior, he appeared in all 12 games, making 11 starts and earning a letter for the third straight season. He was part of an offensive line that racked up 643 yards in an ACC Conference game against Duke. The three year starter at Left Guard played in 40 career games, making 34 starts. The Roseland, VA native was recruited out of Nelson County High School where he earned all-district and all-region honors at both Offensive and Defensive Line, and was named team MVP his senior year.
In addition, the Barnstormers also announced today that they have agreed to terms with rookie free agent Defensive Tackle, Shavod Atkinson. Atkinson (6-2, 284) has spent the last two seasons at Texas State University. In two seasons, he made 18 starts, accumulating 86 tackles and 5 sacks. The Hobart, Oklahoma native also spent two seasons at Independence Community College, where he was named to the KJCCC All-Conference Team in 2008.
Cabbell and Atkinson will be among a group of 35 players that report to the Barnstormers training camp this February to compete for a spot with the club.
