Barber Poles Drop 4-2 Decision in Hamilton

January 26, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release

The Ottawa 67's were unable to make it consecutive wins in a last-minute Wednesday night game, falling 4-2 to the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Ottawa received goals from Jack Matier, and Thomas Johnston, while Will Cranley was called upon to make 25 stellar saves, but a strong opening 40 minutes allowed the Bulldogs to double up the Barber Poles.

Hamilton got off to a quick start, with Avery Hayes scoring just 25 seconds into the contest. A powerplay marker from Nathan Staios at 6:21 made it 2-0, and Ottawa found themselves in an early hole.

That said, the 67's were able to respond, less than two minutes later. Hard forechecking by Alex Johnston deep in the Hamilton zone knocked the puck free, and allowed him to feed Jack Matier at the point. The Nashville Predators prospect rifled a shot past Marco Costantini, and drew Ottawa within one.

The second period, unfortunately, yielded a similar storyline to its predecessor. The Bulldogs found two quick goals, off the sticks of Hayes, and Ryan Winterton, respectively, earning themselves a 4-1 lead.

Ottawa cut the deficit in half, with 5:43 to play in the frame. Thomas Johnston walked out from the corner to Costantini's left, and fired a laser of a shot over his shoulder, to bring the score to 4-2.

Despite a valiant effort in the third, and bolstered by a series of remarkable saves from Cranley, this game would finish as the score stood, and the 67's were dealt a 4-2 defeat.

Game Notes:

With two assists, Alex Johnston registered his second straight multi-goal game.

Johnston also led the team with four shots on goal.

Thomas Johnston's goal was his ninth of the season, and earned him third star honours.

Jack Matier has four points in his last five games.
