Saginaw Spirit News Release
Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit (14-20-1-0) dropped a hard-fought contest to their division rival, Soo Greyhounds (22-12-2-1) by a 5-1 final score Wednesday at the GFL Memorial Gardens in the Sault.
The Hounds came into the game, earning at least a point in four straight games. Their 12 victories at home coming into the game was the most in the OHL.
New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox played a stellar game in net, making a season-high 36 saves. The Greyhounds has immense pressure on the Spirit net early, with Lennox standing tall. Finally, as the Spirit were changing, Tanner Dickinson jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone and snapped a laser past the right pad of the Spirit goaltender. Soo outshot the Spirit 12-4 in the opening frame and held a 1-0 lead.
The Spirit started to push offensively in the middle frame, putting up twice as many shot on Samuel Ivanov than they did in the first. Still, the Soo barrage was only moments away. They peppered Lennox with 18 shots when the period was all done, but the Spirit goalie held the fort and kept it a 1-0 deficit.
The floodgates finally opened in the third for the Soo as Rob Calisti and Kirill Kudryavtsev tallied goals to make it 3-0 in favor of the Greyhounds. With under 10:00 remaining, the Spirit got on the board on a goal from in right by Sebastien Gervais. Gervais' goal is his second goal in his last three games and fourth point in those three contests. Goals from Rory Kerins and Cole MacKay 30 seconds apart put the game away for the Greyhounds.
The Spirit return home this weekend to welcome back former captain Cam Baber and the London Knights on Fri. Jan. 28 and Sat. Jan. 29. Saturday is our 14th annual Shocks and Saves Charity Game beginning at 3:30 pm. Come see NHL Alumni Jiri Fischer, Jimmy Carson, John Ogrodnick, Eddie Mio, Milan Hejduk, and Brett MacLean skate with local doctors and first responders.
