CARY, N.C. - Carolina RailHawks forward Etienne Barbara was named the NASL's Player of the Month for May, the league announced Tuesday.
In five matches last month, Barbara scored seven goals and recorded five assists while leading the RailHawks to a 5-0-0 record.
"May was an excellent month for the team, winning all our games," said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. "We had many key contributors to that success, and Etienne certainly deserves this award for the goals and assists he had in the month. He's been in tremendous form this season and he's working really hard to ensure that it continues."
Barbara was also April's Player of the Month, and he's been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week four times this year.
"I'm very happy to have received this award for a second month," Barbara said. "As I always say, I cannot perform without my teammates and what coach does for us. I share this with them as well. I'm very happy for it, and I'm going to keep working hard and try to achieve more."
Fifteen media members from NASL markets cast ballots for Player of the Month, with a first-place vote worth two points and a second-place vote worth one. Barbara received all 15 first-place votes for a total of 30 points. Edmonton forward Kyle Porter finished second with 10 points, Tampa Bay goalkeeper Jeff Attinella and RailHawks forward Pablo Campos were tied for third with two points and Minnesota forward Simone Bracalello was fourth with one point.
For the season, Barbara has 12 goals and five assists for 29 points, and he has at least one goal or one assist in all 10 of the RailHawks' games this season. His 12 goals lead all levels of U.S. professional soccer, and his five assists and 29 points are tops in the NASL.
With just more than one-third of the season complete, Barbara has already established single-season club records for goals and points, and he's tied the club record for most assists in a season. He's also set career club records for goals and points, and he's closing in on the club record for career assists.
Barbara and the RailHawks (8-1-1) have won six in a row, are unbeaten in their last nine and have built an eight-point lead at the top of the NASL table. They face to Edmonton at Foote Field on Friday at 9:30 p.m. EST. The match will be streamed live at CarolinaRailHawks.com. They return to WakeMed Soccer Park on June 18, when they will meet Tampa Bay at 7 p.m. For tickets, call the Carolina RailHawks box office at 919-859-5425 or visit CarolinaRailHawks.com.
