JACKSON, Tenn. - The Birmingham Barons (12-20) squandered a strong outing from Tanner Banks in a 3-2 loss to the Jackson Generals (16-15) on Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Jackson.

Banks, who earned a spot start after scheduled starter Jimmy Lambert was scratched due to flu-like symptoms, tossed five scoreless frames and allowed just one hit. The southpaw struck out three and held the Generals in check in his fourth start of the season.

The Barons built up a 2-0 lead behind an RBI-double off the bat of Luis Gonzalez in the third and a run-scoring single from Trey Michalczewski in the seventh.

Zack Burdi worked out of a sixth-inning jam to keep the lead intact and Alec Hansen maneuvered out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the seventh before he ran into trouble in the eighth.

Hansen, who earned a promotion to Double-A Birmingham from Class-A Advanced Winston-Salem on Saturday, induced a pair of pop flies and struck out Jackson's Ben DeLuzio to close the seventh. However, a mishap on right-hander Luis Martinez's entry in the eighth forced Hansen to re-enter the game and begin his second inning of work.

Hansen proceeded to hit the lone batter he faced in the eighth and the baserunner later came around to score. Generals designated hitter Ramon Hernandez brought home the go-ahead run with a two-out single off Martinez.

The Barons threatened in the ninth but stranded the potential tying run on second as right-hander Kevin Ginkel locked down his fourth save of the season for the Generals.

Martinez (L, 0-1) suffered the loss for the Barons, while Damien Magnifico (W, 1-0) collected the win for the Generals.

Birmingham and Jackson will continue their five-game series Wednesday morning. The Barons will send left-hander Kodi Medeiros (0-4, 5.79) to the mound against Generals right-hander Emilio Vargas (1-0, 5.08). First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m. at The Ballpark at Jackson.

Coverage of Wednesday's game will begin at 10:50 a.m. with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show on WJQX-FM 100.5.
