Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
South Bend, Indiana - The Quad Cities River Bandits saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday, as they failed to score until the ninth inning in a 6-2 loss to the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field.
While Cubs' starter Luis Devers no-hit Quad Cities over his 6.0 innings of work, William Fleming struggled to hold off the South Bend offense, which scored the opening run in the bottom of the first on an Owen Caissie RBI single.
After the right-hander worked a clean second and third, the Cubs tripled their lead with back-to-back solo homers in the fourth courtesy of Caissie and Jake Washer, before the latter struck again in the fifth with a two-run single to extend the Bandits' deficit to 5-0.
Fleming worked 5.0 innings for the third time as a River Bandit, but allowed a career-high 11 hits en route to five earned runs.
In the sixth, Chase Wallace took over on the bump for Q.C. but also ran into the home run ball with Pete Crow-Armstrong sending a solo shot over the left field fence for his second homer of the series.
Trailing 6-0, Luca Tresh ended South Bends' no-hit bid with a one-out single against Michael McAvene, but it's the only knock Quad Cities would muster until the ninth inning, where the Bandits strung together four consecutive two-out base runners against Sheldon Reed and pushed across a pair of runs on singles from Herard Gonzalez and Juan Carlos Negret.
Harrison Beethe and Parker Harm each tossed a scoreless relief inning for the Bandits to close out the game.
With a career-high matching 6.0 scoreless innings, Devers (2-0) earned the win for South Bend, while Fleming (0-2) got tagged with the loss for Quad Cities.
The River Bandits will still have a chance to win the three-game series in the finale tomorrow, where Rylan Kaufman (1-5, 4,88) will take the ball against the Cubs' Kohl Franklin (1-5, 6.75). First pitch at Four Winds Field is scheduled for 2:05pm ET.
