Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - Starter Noel Vela pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a win, 8-0, over the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate) on Sunday afternoon in Dayton. Vela's season-long appearance featured just four hits and one walk with a season-high 10 strikeouts. Fort Wayne's win locked in a series win, two games to one.
The left-hander hopped on the mound in the bottom of the first with a 1-0 lead and proceeded to retire the first eight batters he faced, striking out three in a row before finally surrendering a hit in the third. Vela dominated the end of his appearance, too. The southpaw fanned the final four batters he faced, striking out the side in order in the seventh.
In between, Fort Wayne (11-13, 38-52) battered Dayton (6-16, 45-43) pitching in the fourth and fifth innings. After a Jarryd Dale walk and Matthew Acosta single in the fourth, Max Ferguson doubled in the pair to make it 3-0. Ferguson scored on an error one batter later. The TinCaps led 4-0 after four. In the fifth, Cole Cummings flied a ball to right for a triple and Lucas Dunn doubled right after him to make it 5-0. Dunn finished the game with three doubles. Acosta knocked home Dunn with his second single of the game to put the score at 6-0 after five.
In the ninth, Corey Rosier smashed his sixth home run of the season over the right field wall. It was a two-run homer to make it 8-0. Nick Thwaits and Ramon Perez pitched the final two innings after Vela came out. The victory was Fort Wayne's first shutout win since June 23 versus Great Lakes, another game that Vela started.
