Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Yasiel Balaguert delivered three hits and an RBI but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 4-3 to the Salem Red Sox Friday night at TicketReturn.com Field.

The contest began with Myrtle Beach (11-10) Trevor Clifton hitting Red Sox (14-8) leadoff hitter Yoan Moncada. After a balk and a wild pitch, Andrew Benintendi grounded out to first to score Moncada and make the score 1-0 Red Sox. Clifton mostly settled down from that point on, yielding just two runs on five hits over five innings of work.

In the bottom of the inning, the Pelicans strung together three straight hits from Charcer Burks, Ian Happ and Balaguert to tie the game at one.

Both Clifton and Salem starter Matt Kent traded zeroes over the next three innings.

In the top of the fifth, Salem shortstop Mauricio Dubon lined a single to right center after a nine-pitch battle with Clifton. He then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Benintendi promptly dropped a single to center to give Salem the lead at 2-1.

With the score still 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Kent hit Burks with a pitch before allowing a game-tying RBI double to Ian Happ. The next batter was Balaguert, who grounded a single up the middle to score Happ and give Myrtle Beach their first lead at 3-2. Happ has 18 RBIs in his last 19 games, and Balaguert has plated 14 in his last dozen contests.

After a perfect sixth inning, Pelicans reliever Ryan McNeil (0-1) ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. With one out, McNeil allowed back-to-back singles to Bryan Hudson and Moncada. After a Moncada stolen base and a walk to Dubon, Benintendi lofted a two-run double down the left field line, putting the Red Sox back on top, 4-3.

Jamie Callahan (1-1) and Taylor Grover combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to seal the first game of the series for Salem. Grover earned the save, his second of the year.

RHP Erick Leal (2-1, 5.40 ERA) will look to get the Pelicans even Saturday against RHP Travis Lakins (2-1, 2.33 ERA) of the Red Sox. Saturday's contest is a Locals Appreciation Saturday, meaning all locals receive $3 off their game ticket. The night will be capped with a spectacular East Coast Pyrotechnics Fireworks Extravaganza. Coverage begins at 6:50pm. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and the TuneIn App.
