Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers fell to the Bakersfield Blaze 6-4 on Sunday at San Manuel Stadium. The difference proved to be Blaze slugger Tyler O'Neill's two-run homer in the top of the ninth, it was his California League best 24th of the year.

Bakersfield led 4-0 through five innings before the 66ers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tyler Palmer had a bunt single for Inland Empire (51-53, 16-18) and went to third on starter Scott DeCecco's throwing error. Mike Fish promptly singled home Palmer. Later in the frame Kody Eaves singled in Fish to cut the deficit to 4-2. Neither starter, DeCecco (6IP, 6H, 2ER, 3BB, 4K) for the Blaze or Inland Empire's Ryan Etsell (5IP, 8H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) figured in the decision.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Inland Empire tied the game when Eric Aguilera and Bo Way opened the frame with singles against southpaw reliever Nick Valenza. With one out, the lefty stayed in to face right-handed batting Caleb Adams. The 66ers right fielder drilled a ball into the right field corner to knock in both runners and knot the game at 4-4.

66ers stalwart Geoff Broussard (2-2) came out of the pen in the ninth and struck out Aaron Barbosa on an 11 pitch at-bat. Tim Lopes followed with a single to center and then O'Neill struck with the mammoth homer to left field to take the 6-4 lead. It was O'Neill's third straight game with a dinger and his eighth in 11 games since returning from Team Canada's gold medal performance in the Pan Am games.

Emilio Pagan, who had escaped a jam in the eighth to preserve the lead worked around two hits in the ninth to secure his third win of the season for Bakersfield (39-67, 13-23).

The 66ers open a series at San Manuel Stadium against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Monday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
