Published on January 5, 2009 under NBA G League (G League) News Release

OREM, Utah, Jan. 5, 2009 - Trey Johnson poured in 34 points to lead the Bakersfield Jam to a 90-87 victory over the Los Angeles D-Fenders in game three of the 2009 NBA Development League Showcase Monday at the McKay Events Center.

The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Jam and improved Bakersfield to 11-5. Los Angeles dipped to 4-10.

The D-Fenders led 47-44 at the half and by as many as 13 points during the game. Bakersfield took its first lead at 85-83 on a pair of Nick Lewis free throws with 3:59 to play. Los Angeles had an opportunity to send the game to overtime, but Anthony Coleman's last gasp three-pointer from the left wing fell short.

"We were able to respond tonight, we had lost three in a row, and I felt like I had to come in here and lead my team," Johnson said. "(Point guard) Mateen Cleaves was out, and he was just telling me from the sidelines, you're a leader now, you have to lead your team. That's what I did."

Johnson converted 12-of-19 field goal attempts and 10-of-12 free throws for Bakersfield. Derrick Byars recorded his first double-double of the season with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Lewis added 17 points and Ashanti Cook 12.

Joe Crawford scored 16 points to lead Los Angeles. Coleman added 15, while Jamaal Brown and Darren Cooper chipped in 12 and Dwayne Mitchell had 11.

Both the Jam and D-Fenders return to action on Thursday for their second game of the Showcase. Bakersfield faces the Austin Toros and Los Angeles plays the Utah Flash in the final game of the event.
