Back-To-Back Bombs Lift Ports Past Quakes 5-3

STOCKTON, Calif. - Through the first 15 games of the 2008 season, the Stockton Ports have had consistent pitching on most nights. Offensively, it's been feast or famine. For the second straight night, however, the Ports offense came through when it needed to and provided consistent run support as the Boys from Banner Island won their second straight game, beating the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final of 5-3.

It was the offense that struck early for Stockton in the bottom of the first. With one out, Josh Horton tripled to right and came home on an ensuing sac-fly from Frank Martinez for a 1-0 lead.

Stockton kept the pressure on Quakes starter Amalio Diaz (1-1) in the second. Jed Morris led off the inning with a double, and Chris Carter followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right to give the Ports a 3-0 lead. Carter, who hit 27 home runs for Low-A Kannapolis last season, is now 4-for-6 in his last two games after getting off to a slow start.

Rancho got to Ports starter Jason Fernandez (1-0) in the third. Fernandez, who started in place of Jared Lansford, allowed a run on an RBI single from Peter Borjos that cut the Ports lead to 3-1. It was the only run Fernandez would allow, however, in his five innings of work. Fernandez earned the win, allowing just four hits while striking out three in a solid effort.

The Ports got to Diaz twice more in the fifth. Darryl Lawhorn and Archie Gilbert led off the inning with back-to-back homers to put the Ports on top 5-1. It marks the first time the Ports have gone back-to-back this season, and it knocked Diaz from the game. He was tagged with the loss after going four-plus innings, allowing all five runs on six hits while striking out four.

Lansford, who was moved to the bullpen for the game (and possibly more), came on in relief to start the sixth inning and set down the first six batters he faced. In the eighth, Rancho mounted a mini-rally, as they led off the frame with back-to-back singles from P.J. Phillips and Anthony Norman. Phillips scored on a ground ball to second from Abel Nieves, and two batters later, Mike Trumbo added an RBI single to score Norman to make it 5-3. Lansford escaped further trouble in the inning by getting Wil Ortiz to fly to left.

Lansford turned in a solid effort in relief, going three innings and allowing the two runs on three hits. He struck out four and didn't walk anybody.

Andrew Carignan (SV, 4) came on in the ninth to record his second save in as many nights as he struck out the side. Carignan is now 4-for-4 in save chances.

The Ports and Quakes continue their series on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Right-hander Fautino De Los Santos (1-2, 3.94 ERA) heads to the hill for Stockton, opposed by right-hander Sean O'Sullivan (2-1, 2.81 ERA) for the Quakes. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free Ports cap courtesy of the California Highway Patrol. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PST.
