
Bachar Quiets Naturals in 7-0 Shutout Victory to Mark Sod Poodles 50th Win

AMARILLO, Texas - The Amarillo Sod Poodles were victorious Sunday, defeating the Naturals by a final score of 7-0 in front of an 18th consecutive sellout crowd of 6,674 at HODGETOWN to mark the franchise's 50th win of the inaugural season. Soddies starter Lake Bachar was brilliant Sunday in his 15th start, matching a career-best seven and two-third innings while also tying for a career-high nine strikeouts. Bachar didn't allow a run on his four singles surrendered in his seventh victory of the season.
Sod Poodles infielder Ivan Castillo extended his 18-game hit streak in the third inning of Sunday's game on an infield single to third base. He finished his night going 2-for-4 with his team-leading 23rd double and two RBI.
Amarillo struck first Sunday as they plated two runs in the third inning to take the early 2-0 lead. After a pair of singles by Taylor Kohlwey and Castillo, outfielder Edward Olivares worked a walk to load the bases for Hudson Potts. Potts then singled through the hole in between shortstop and third base scoring Kohlwey and Castillo.
In the fifth inning, Olivares belted his sixteenth home run of the season to straightaway center field to extend the Sod Poodles lead to 3-0.
The Sod Poodles blew the ballgame open in the seventh inning as they plated four runs on three hits to stretch their lead to 7-0. Kohlwey walked after an eight-pitch at-bat. One batter later Rodrigo Orozco singled to right-center field advancing Kohlwey to second base. Castillo then roped a two-RBI double to left-center field. Olivares then was hit by a pitch followed by a Potts walk to load the bases. Brad Zunica hit a broken-bat single to center field scoring Castillo and Olivares.
Amarillo starter Bachar exited the ballgame after tossing seven and two-thirds quality innings. Evan Miller followed out of the bullpen to finish the game for the Soddies. Miller tossed one and one-third shutout frames, allowing two hits.
The Sod Poodles will look for a series victory Monday night against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at HODGETOWN. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Tomorrow's Preview: The Sod Poodles continue into the series finale of the four-game series with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Monday at HODGETOWN. Southpaw Nick Margavicius will make the start for the Soddies and will matchup against righty Brady Singer.
Sellout Streak: Following Sunday's game of 6,674 fans at HODGETOWN, the Sod Poodles have hosted 18 straight sellouts and 28 overall so far during the 2019 season in 48 home games.
Bachar Power: Right-hander Lake Bachar came just shy of new career highs in his 15th start with Amarillo. He exited matching career highs with 7 2/3 innings and nine strikeouts. He has struck out a total of nine batters in three of his last four starts and is 7-0 in his last nine starts.
Team Lead: Lake Bachar took the team lead in wins with his seventh victory on Sunday evening.
50 Wins: The Sod Poodles reached their 50th win in their inaugural season with a 7-0 shutout victory Sunday evening.
Oli Oli Home Run Spree: Edward Olivares hit his 16th home run of the season, tying for the league-lead at that number with three others. His home run count leads the Amarillo squad. It marked his third home run in as many games.
18 Game Hit-Streak: Ivan Castillo, who ranks first in Double-A with a .347 batting average, extended his hit streak to 18 games Sunday night. Castillo is 28-for-75 with 17 RBI, 12 runs, three home runs, seven doubles, and three walks during the stretch. Castillo's 18-game hit streak is the second-longest (23 is longest) this season in the Texas League and is a franchise high for the Soddies.
Zeroed: The Sod Poodles pitching combined for their fifth shutout of the season Sunday evening with the four-hit, 7-0 victory over the Naturals. It was the first shutout against Northwest Arkansas and second against a Northern division team in 2019.
July Heat: The Sod Poodles offensive is batting .278 with 22 home runs in the month of July. The Soddies team batting average ranks the tied for best in Double-A and their 22 home runs rank tied for third-best in Double-A. Amarillo also ranks second in all of Double-A with 116 runs scored during the month of July.
Potts For President: In 19 games since being taken off of the injured list, Hudson Potts has collected five multi-hit games and has totaled five doubles and five home runs with 20 RBI. On Sunday, he collected two more RBIs.
Soddies To The Show: On Sunday, the Padres selected the contracts of RHP Michel Baez (#49) and LHP Adrian Morejon (#50) and optioned OF Josh Naylor and RHP Trey Wingenter to El Paso (AAA). Additionally, LHP Travis Radke has been transferred to Amarillo from El Paso.
Morejon's Big League Debut: Adrian Morejon made his first-ever Major League start at Wrigley Field, tossing two and one-third innings while allowing one earned run on three hits. Morejon 's first-career Major League strikeout was tallied against pitcher Kyle Hendricks.
Bomb City Talent: Padres' third and fourth-best pitching prospects (MLB.com) Adrian Morejon (LHP) and Michel Baez (RHP) mark the third and fourth Sod Poodles players to receive their first-ever Major League call-ups this season and fifth and sixth overall from Amarillo who have reached the Major League level in 2019. Morejon went 0-4 record with a 4.25 ERA over 16 starts for Amarillo while the six-foot-eight Baez appeared 15 times out of the bullpen for the Sod Poodles and went 3-2 with a 2.00 ERA with 38 strikeouts and tallied 10 multi-inning stints.
The Kid: At 20 years and 144 days old, LHP Adrian Morejon will be the 2nd-youngest Padre to make his pitching debut, behind just Jay Franklin (was 18 years, 172 days on Sept. 4, 1971), and he'll be the youngest Padre pitcher to make his MLB debut in a start since Clay Kirby (20 years, 290 days) on April 11, 1969. The list of the youngest Padres to debut are as follows: Brian Geer (18 years, 122 days), Jay Franklin (18 years, 172 days), Mike Ivie (19 years, 27 days), Roberto Alomar (20 years, 77 days), Fernando Tatis Jr. (20 years, 85 days), Adrian Morjeon (20 years, 144 days), Andres Muñoz (20 years, 177 days), Jim Beswick (20 years, 178 days). Offensive Showcase: The Northwest Arkansas Naturals collected 18 hits and 14 runs Saturday as they defeated the Sod Poodles 14-3. The Naturals 18 hits and 14 runs mark the most hits and runs the Amarillo pitching staff has allowed in their 2019 inaugural season.
Vicious Valdez: Dauris Valdez tossed two scoreless innings Saturday against the Naturals. Valdez allowed one run on one hit and struck out three of the eight batters he faced. Valdez's outing marks the third appearance in a row he has pitched two scoreless innings as the others came on July 13th and 18th against Frisco and Springfield.
First Go For Gore: LHP MacKenzie Gore, ranked as baseball's number 3-rated prospect, made his second Double-A start for the Sod Poodles and his first-career start at HODGETOWN on Friday. He did not get a decision after he tossed four innings while allowing a career-high nine hits and seven runs with four strikeouts. The 20-year-old was drafted in the first round (3rd overall) of the 2017 MLB draft out of Whiteville High School in North Carolina.
Comeback Kids: The Sod Poodles completed two consecutive six-run comebacks on Thursday and Friday night. Despite falling short in Thursday's contest, the Sod Poodles claimed victory Friday with the comeback plus the lead to win 12-8 over the Naturals. The biggest deficit Amarillo has overcome in a game in eight runs which happened on May 26 against Midland.
Count It: Edward Olivares slugged his team-leading 14th and 15th home runs of the season in the sixth inning and eighth inning Friday night. It marked three total in his last seven games and second multi-home run performance this season.
Out Cold: After combining for 28 hits and 21 runs over their last two games on Thursday and Friday, the Sod Poodles offense was kept at bay Saturday night as they totaled three runs on eight hits.
Wild Win: The Sod Poodles marked just their fifth win of the season when trailing after six innings and eighth win when tied after seven innings on Friday night.
Triple's Alley: Taylor Kohlwey and Edward Olivares both roped their first Double-A triples this season Thursday night against the Cardinals. Kohlwey recorded two triples with High-A Lake Elsinore before being promoted to Amarillo and four triples last season with Double-A San Antonio. Olivares recorded a career-high ten triples last season with Lake Elsinore.
Pinch Hit Dinger: Luis Torrens blasted a pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday to tie the ballgame up late at 9-9. This was the second pinch-hit home run of the season for the Sod Poodles as Peter Van Gansen hit a solo home run in the eighth inning on June 20th at Tulsa.
Inside-the-Park Grand Slam: In the seventh inning of Tuesday night's ballgame, Kyle Overstreet hit an inside-the-park grand slam. The grand slam was the first in franchise history and Overstreet's second career grand slam. Overstreet's last grand slam was of the walk-off variety coming on May 5th, 2018 against the Corpus Christi Hooks to complete a five-run ninth-inning comeback victory.
