Baby Cakes Storm Back to Salvage Doubleheader Split

Austin Dean had a go-ahead two-run triple in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the sixth as the New Orleans Baby Cakes scored 11 unanswered runs to rally past the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 11-5 and earn a split of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Dodgers used home runs from Connor Joe, Angelo Mora and Andrew Toles to build a 5-0 lead against Mike Kickham after the top of the third, but the Baby Cakes began their comeback in the bottom half.

Singles by Jon Rodriguez, Rafael Ortega and Braxton Lee got New Orleans on the board, and one batter later, Eric Campbell ripped his fifth home run of the year deep over the left field fence to bring the 'Cakes within a run.

Lee tripled to lead off the fifth inning, and after a one-out walk to Campbell, Dean laced a triple to left-center to give the Baby Cakes their first lead of the day in either game. Dean then trotted home on a single by Cristhian Adames for a 7-5 advantage.

Dodgers reliever Madison Younginer opened the sixth with three straight walks on 12 pitches, and Dean greeted Michael Johnson with the Baby Cakes' second grand slam of the season to finish with a career-high six RBI.

Jeff Kinley (1-0) limited Oklahoma City to one hit in three scoreless innings of relief to earn his first Triple-A victory, while Ariel Hernandez (1-2) suffered the loss by yielding two runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

In the opener, the Dodgers rode a six-run fourth inning to a 6-4 win over the Baby Cakes. Kyle Garlick, Henry Ramos and Joe all homered off Kolton Mahoney in a five-batter span, turning a 2-0 New Orleans lead into a 6-2 deficit.

The 'Cakes scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but Brian Schlitter (3-1) retired all six hitters he faced to preserve the Dodgers' win and snap their six-game losing skid.

Mahoney (0-1) was charged with six runs on eight hits in five innings in his Triple-A debut and took the loss.

The teams continue the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
