B2 Networks AHL Game of the Week
Published on April 13, 2006 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
Springfield, MA - For most of the AHL season there has been very little drama regarding the race for the Calder Cup playoffs. The West Division has been the one exception with Chicago, Iowa and Omaha battling for the last entry to the Calder Cup Playoffs. Over the last few weeks each team has made it's charge but the Iowa Stars are now in the driver's seat. The first-year club will try to punch its ticket to the postseason this Friday night, April 14, when the Stars travel to Illinois to take the Peoria Rivermen. B2 Networks exclusive coverage of the game will begin at 7pm CDT.
For most of the season, Iowa played respectable hockey for a true first-year team, hovering around the .500 mark. In their last 10 games, the Stars have been the best team in the West Division winning 9 of 10 contests allowing the team to leap into 4th place and the final playoff spot. Toby Peterson's dramatic overtime game winning goal against Chicago on Tuesday, eliminated the Wolves from postseason contention and moved Iowa to within one point of playing for the Calder Cup. Peterson leads the Stars with 70 points (25-45-70). Loui Erikkson has a team best +18 rating and 57 points (28-29-57.) Dallas Stars goaltending prospect Mike Smith has been solid during Iowa's recent hot streak, winning 7 of the team's last 10 games. This is the city of Peoria's first year in the AHL but not their first as a top affiliate of an NHL team. Through the relocation of the Worcester IceCats to Peoria, the Rivermen were able to renew their relationship with the St. Louis Blues. That affiliation has led to an impressive record of 46-25-3-7 record, 99 points and an outside chance to catch Houston for 2nd place in the division. Jon DiSalvatore is Peoria's leading scorer with 66 points (21-45-60). With several players expected to return from St. Louis for the postseason, the Rivermen will be a team to reckon with in the race for the Calder Cup.
Fans wanting to watch the game will be able to access the broadcast through the individual team websites, or the league site www.theahl.com. The cost to watch is the usual price of $6 dollars. A high speed internet connection and a current version of Windows Media Player are required to view the event.
