Not Their Night

Rajai Davis drummed out five hits for the Altoona Curve, who came back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Binghamton Mets 14-8 last night at Blair County Ballpark. Mike Jacobs, David Bacani and Jay Caligiuri all hit two-run homers and Corey Ragsdale and Zac Clements each picked up three hits for the B-Mets, who lost to Altoona for the third straight day and have dropped 17 of 23 in July.

‘Pen Not So Mighty

Last night, Matt Lindstrom was the only one of Binghamton's three relievers not to allow a run. In their last eight games, B-Mets relievers have allowed 30 runs, 27 of them earned, spanning 33 2/3 innings (7.22 ERA). The Binghamton ‘pen hasn't turned in a scoreless outing since Anderson Garcia threw two shutout innings July 16th vs. Reading. B-Mets relievers have picked up just one save since June 22nd and haven't earned a win since June 30th at New Britain (Garcia). B-Mets starters own all six of the team's wins in July.

Jake At The Plate

Last night, Jacobs hit his 20th homer of the season, extending his own career high. In the process, the first baseman/catcher became the first B-Met in four years to hit 20 longballs in a season. Rob Stratton (29) and Earl Snyder (20) both did so in 2001. The B-Mets record for homers in a season is 37, set by Matt Raleigh in 1997.

The Drive For Five

Last night, Davis had a double amongst his five hits and scored twice, becoming the second player to get five hits in a game against the B-Mets this year. Miguel Negron of New Hampshire went 5 for 6 on July 4th at NYSEG Stadium, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Josh Pressley was the last B-Met with five hits in a game, accomplishing the feat June 17th, 2004 at Akron.

On The Mound

RHP Orlando Roman (3-3, 4.38)

Last Time Out: Sat. @ BOW (ND): 6 IP, R, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 K (L 6-5, 11)...Orlando hit Peter Bergeron to begin the first and, two singles later, Bergeron scored, with the rehabbing Javy Lopez picking up the RBI. Bergeron and Lopez combined for five of Bowie's six hits off Orlando, who didn't allow anyone past second base after that first inning and left with a 5-1 lead that the bullpen was unable to hold.

This Season: Saturday's outing was the fourth straight start in which Orlando left with a chance to win, only to see the bullpen cough up the lead, netting him a no-decision despite a 2.25 ERA over those four outings. The righthander's gone at least six innings in his last three starts and five in 10 of the 11 starts he's made since joining the rotation May 13th. Orlando is 1-3 with a 4.19 ERA in 12 starts this year, with the lone win coming May 29th vs. Trenton.

Against Altoona: Orlando's only other outing against the Curve came June 9th at Blair County Ballpark. That day, the righthander gave up a run on five hits and two walks, striking out one, in five innings of work. Orlando allowed the run in the fourth on a Craig Stansberry sacrifice fly. He left with a 2-1 lead, but got a no-decision when Altoona won 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth.

Background: The 26-year-old Vega Baja, Puerto Rico native got into 28 games between High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton last year, starting 21 of them. He was 2-2, 4.50 in five starts with Binghamton last season, striking out 27 and walking 13 in 26 innings. Orlando is in his seventh professional season after being drafted by the Mets in the 31st round in 1999 out of Indian Hills (IA) Community College.
