LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets split a doubleheader with the Erie SeaWolves on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Erie starter Tommy Collier fell one out short of a no-hitter in the SeaWolves 2-0 win in game one. Darrell Ceciliani lined a single to right field with two outs in the seventh for the B-Mets only hit. Steven Matz tossed a complete-game seven innings and allowed just two unearned runs, but took the hard-luck loss. Binghamton salvaged the split with a 4-0 victory in game two. Brandon Nimmo reached base in all four of his plate appearances and scored twice. Hansel Robles tossed five scoreless innings and struck out six to help the B-Mets snap a three-game losing streak to the SeaWolves.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Rainy Lara makes his 12h start of the season and second against Erie. The Bani, Dominican Republic native is coming off a win in his latest outing. He threw six innings of one-run ball and struck out five in an 8-3 victory over New Britain on Monday, June 30. Lara had one of his roughest starts of the season in his first matchup with the SeaWolves. He lasted just 3.2 innings and gave up a season-high six runs on April 27. Binghamton went on to win the game 9-6. The righty was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent on October 31, 2009.
ERIE STARTER: LHP Kyle Ryan toes the rubber for the 17th time this season and the second time against Binghamton. The southpaw took the loss his last time out. He gave up seven runs on ten hits in six innings as Erie fell to Akron, 10-3, on Tuesday, July 1. In his only other outing against the B-Mets this season, Ryan allowed four runs in five innings and took the loss in a 4-2 Binghamton win in game one of a doubleheader on June 14. The Auburndale High School (Auburndale, FL) product was taken by Detroit in the 12th round of the 2010 draft.
MAYBE JUST PLAY NINE TODAY: Binghamton and Erie have played three games and 30 innings over the last two days. 16 of those frames came in a marathon game on Friday night. The teams have used a combined 32 players and have had 212 at-bats. They played a total of 9 hours and 43 minutes in a 28 hour period. Friday night's game lasted 5 hours and 26 minutes, four minutes shy of the longest game in franchise history.
DIL-SON!: B-Mets INF Dilson Herrera went 1-for-3 in the night cap on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The 20-year-old is 12-for-38 during the stretch. That includes a four-hit performance on June 28 at Altoona. It's the fourth longest streak for Herrera this season. He had stretches on 9, 10 and 11 games with St. Lucie (High-A). Herrera is the youngest player in the Eastern League.
WALK IT OUT: The B-Mets walked nine times in Saturday's doubleheader. That includes three walks each by Brandon Nimmo and Brian Burgamy. Two of those free passes resulted in Binghamton runs. Erie pitchers have issued 313 base on balls this season, the second most in the league.
STARTING THINGS RIGHT: Both Steven Matz and Hansel Robles shut down the Erie lineup in Saturday's twin bill. Neither allowed an earned run and combined to walk just one batter. Matz struck out seven batters in a complete game in the opener, while Robles went five innings and retired 14 in a row at one stretch in game two.
BACK, BACK, BACK...OH: Binghamton went without a home run in Saturday's doubleheader. It's the first time the B-Mets have gone without a long ball in back-to-back games since June 12-14. Binghamton had gone yard eight times in the previous three outings.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton welcomes Portland to NYSEG Stadium for a four-game set starting Monday at 6:35 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the hill for Binghamton.
