SeaWolves Stun B-Mets in Slugfest, 10-9

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning and stranded the bases loaded in the tenth in a 10-9 loss to the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. Despite 15 hits, including three home runs, the B-Mets came up short in the series finale. The teams combined for 19 runs and 33 hits in Binghamton's third extra-inning game in four days.

Leading 8-6 in the ninth, Binghamton watched their advantage disappear with one swing. Facing reliever Adam Kolarek, Steven Moya belted a two-run homer off the video board in right-center field to tie the game at eight. Moya's third long ball of the series forced the game into extras.

Erie kept their offensive momentum going in the tenth, hanging two runs on Chase Huchingson. The SeaWolves loaded the bases on two walks and a single, and regained the lead when Corey Jones lined an RBI single into right. Dean Green padded the lead with a run-producing groundout.

Binghamton mustered a threat without a hit in the bottom of the inning. Will Startup allowed four straight to reach on a hit batter and three consecutive walks. His final free pass to Jayce Boyd forced in a run and ended his night. With the tying run on third base, Kenny Faulk entered and preserved the lead, retiring three straight B-Mets. The southpaw struck out Kyle Johnson and Dilson Herrera before inducing Brian Burgamy to pop out to short.

The B-Mets were forced to play catch up from the beginning. The SeaWolves jumped on Lara with three consecutive singles to open the contest. The B-Mets right-hander bounced back with two straight outs and nearly escaped harm before surrendering a bases-clearing double by Dean Green. His extra-base hit, a one-hopper off the center field wall, gave Erie a three-run lead.

Binghamton returned serve in the bottom of the first against Kyle Ryan as Dilson Herrera and Burgamy put the B-Mets on the board with back-to-back doubles. The home team responded two-out production of their own as Darrell Ceciliani poked an RBI single to left, plating Burgamy to cut Erie's lead to one.

The visitors used more two-out offense to stretch out their lead in the third. With Devon Travis at second, Green came through with another two-out double, pulling a two-bagger down the third base line. Aaron Westlake and Dixon Machado tacked on against Lara with consecutive RBI singles, kicking Erie's advantage to four.

The B-Mets kept pace with Erie's elevated offensive pace with a three-run third inning. Herrera started the push with a single and crossed home when Burgamy doubled to left field. Two batters later, TJ River hammered a 1-1 pitch from Ryan over the left field wall. His first career Double-A long ball put Binghamton within a run.

Binghamton flexed their muscles again in the fifth inning. Lawley erased Erie's lead by depositing Ryan's 1-1 pitch several tracks deep into the rail yard beyond the left-field wall. Lawley's team-leading 15th homer of the season, his fifth in the last seven games, tied the game at six.

Lara battled back and posted two scoreless innings after Erie's three-run third. The righty was lifted in the sixth after two SeaWolves reached safely. Jack Leathersich took the reins and stranded both runners to preserve the tie game.

Travis Taijeron mimicked Lawley's blast with a big fly of his own in the sixth to give Binghamton their first lead of the night. With a runner on, the B-Mets outfielder blasted a tiebreaking homer over the left-field wall, his eighth long ball of the season.

Startup (3-1) allowed one run over two innings of relief and earned the win after Faulk's heroics in the tenth. Huchingson (1-1) was tagged for two runs on four hits in 1-2/3 innings in the defeat. Faulk stranded all three inherited runners to earn his first save of the season. Lara surrendered six runs and matched a career-high by allowing eleven hits over 5-1/3 innings in the no-decision.

The B-Mets (51-37) open a four-game series against the first-place Portland Sea Dogs on Monday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni makes his first start of the season with the B-Mets against LHP Brian Johnson.
