Game #137 - Wednesday, August 29, 2012
FirstEnergy Stadium - Reading, PA - 7:05 PM
LAST GAME: The Reading Phillies pounded out 15 hits, including four homers, and scored eleven runs with two outs to beat the Binghamton Mets 12-8 last night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Darin Ruf tied the game at eight by blasting a two-run homer in the sixth off Armando Rodriguez and Jake Fox followed with a solo homer to give Reading the lead for good. The B-Mets grabbed the lead with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run double by Francisco Pena and a two-run homer by Juan Lagares, but the R-Phils plated four runs in the third off Cory Mazzoni to tie it. Binghamton grabbed another lead with two runs in the fifth off eventual winner Colby Shreve, but fell behind in the sixth. Reading tacked on three more runs off reliever Brad Holt. Rodriguez suffered the loss for Binghamton.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (7-11, 4.66) makes his 18th start with the B-Mets and first against the Reading Phillies. Germen has lost five of his last six starts with Binghamton, falling to the Portland Sea Dogs in his last game on August 24. He allowed four runs on nine hits over 7-2/3 innings. The righty struck out seven, walked three and surrendered two home runs. Germen started the season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA over five games before getting promoted to Binghamton in early May. The Dominican Republic native won his only start with the Buffalo Bisons (AAA) on July 26.
LHP Adam Morgan (3-0, 3.00) takes the mound for his fifth start as a Reading Philly since being promoted in early August. He earned the win in his last start against the Erie SeaWolves on August 24, surrendering two runs while scattering seven hits over six innings. Morgan started the season with the Clearwater Threshers (High-A), going 4-10 with a 3.29 ERA over 20 starts. Four times Morgan turned in a quality start and suffered a loss. Over 123.0 innings, he struck out 140 and exited with the lowest WHIP in the Florida State League at 1.07. Morgan was selected in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft out of Alabama.
STILL FLOR-ING IT: Wilmer Flores continued his August tear with a three-hit game last night, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Flores has hit safely in a season-best nine straight games. He has hit .543 (19-for-35) during the streak with four three-hit games. He has collected seven doubles, one triple, three homers, six RBI and ten runs scored. The infielder has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games and led the Eastern League with a .478 batting average since August 9.
RUF-ED UP: Darin Ruf continued his torrid pace in August with a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning against Armando Rodriguez. It was his league-leading 37th blast of the season, tying the Reading Phillies single-season record set by Ryan Howard in 2004. Ruf has hit 19 homers in the month of August, six of them have come against the B-Mets.
MATHEMATICALLY DONE: Binghamton's loss last night officially ended their playoff hopes. They have failed to make the postseason for the eighth straight year, the longest drought in franchise history.
THE BIG INNING: The B-Mets scored six runs on three hits in the fourth inning last night. It was the fifth time this year they have plated six or more runs in an inning and first since July 15 against the Erie SeaWolves. It was the first time this season they have lost a game when scoring six runs or more in one inning.
TWIN KILLING FEVER: Jefry Marte rolled into two double plays last night, becoming the sixth B-Met to bounce in multiple twin killings in one game. The B-Mets have hit into at least one double play in the first six games of the current roadtrip. Through 136 games this season, they have hit into 126 double plays, seven shy of the franchise record set in 2009. Juan Centenohas extended the individual franchise record by bouncing into 21 this year. Marte has done it 20 times.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their season series against the Reading Phillies tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski makes his final start of the season against Austin Hyatt.
