Game #88 - Monday, July 9, 2012

Peoples Natural Gas Field - Altoona, PA - 12:00 PM

LAST GAME: The B-Mets scored three runs in three separate innings and held off a late attack by the Altoona Curve in a 10-9 win last night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Binghamton collected eleven hits, including six for extra-bases, and held a six-run lead before the Curve plated five runs in the eighth inning. Stefan Welch nearly tied the game with a single to center, but Brock Holt was thrown out at the plate by Juan Lagares. Allan Dykstra went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Lagares contributed offensively with two runs scored and a pair of doubles in a three-hit game. Gonzalez Germen walked a career-high five batters, but hurled 7.1 innings to earn his fifth win. Adrian Rosario threw a scoreless ninth to secure his third save.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (5-4, 4.06) makes his 15th start of the season and third against the Curve. The lefty took the no-decision in his last start on July 3 versus Altoona. He allowed two runs on three hits over six innings in a game the B-Mets would win 3-2 in comeback fashion. In two starts against the Curve he has gone 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA. Over 11.0 innings he has struck out 11, walked three and allowed a batting average of .333. Selected in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, Gorski is in his first season with the B-Mets.

RHP Phil Irwin (1-6, 4.18) makes his 11th start of the season and first against the B-Mets. He lost his last start against the Reading Phillies on July 4. He allowed just one run over seven innings, but got no offensive support in a 1-0 loss. Irwin struck out seven and walked one. Irwin did not begin his season until early May with Bradenton (High-A). He made one start before joining the Curve on May 11. Selected in the 21st round of the 2009 draft by the Pirates out of the University of Mississippi, Irwin is in his second year with the Curve.

KEEPING IT UP ON THE ROAD: Last night's victory extended Binghamton's winning streak to four games, matching a season-high. They have won five of their last games overall and nine of their last eleven games away from home. The B-Mets' 25 wins on the road this season puts them fifth in the league. They are nine games under .500 at home (16-25).

RIGHT BACK IN THE GROOVE: B-Mets first baseman Allan Dykstra missed two months of action after suffering a broken forearm on April 14. He collected his first three-hit game of the season last night and hit his first home run since April 9. All three hits for the lefty went to left field.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE EIGHTH INNING: The Curve scored five runs in a comeback effort in the eighth inning last night. Of the 25 runs allowed by Binghamton on the roadtrip, they have given up 10 (40%) in the eighth inning. The B-Mets have surrendered at least one run in the eighth frame in all five games of the roadtrip.

KEEP ON WALKING: The B-Mets pitching staff combined to issue nine walks last night, setting a season-high. It was the most walks they have allowed since issuing 11 free passes to the Harrisburg Senators on June 7, 2011.

ON THE NATIONAL STAGE: The B-Mets had two players take part in the All-Star Futures Game in Kansas City yesterday. Zack Wheeler retired both batters he faced for the US Team while Wilmer Flores went 0-for-2 for the World Team. The US Team earned a 17-5 win.

CAN WE SPEED THESE UP: Last night's game clocked in at 3:18. The last 18 B-Mets games have lasted an average of three hours. Binghamton has not played a nine inning game in less than 2:30 since June 7 against the Harrisburg Senators (2:29).

READING-BOUND: The B-Mets will be sending three players to the All-Star Game: Eric Campbell, Jefry Marte and Armando Rodriguez.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets enjoy two days off for the All-Star Break before starting the second half with an eight-game homestand. The set kicks off on Thursday night at 6:35 PM against the Erie SeaWolves
