BINGHAMTON, NY - The Reading Phillies collected ten hits and strolled away with eight walks en route to a 9-3 victory over the Binghamton Mets tonight at NYSEG Stadium. The R-Phils had at least two men aboard in six different innings.

B-Mets starter Robert Carson began with a perfect first inning and battled to keep Reading off the board in the second before stumbling in the third. With two outs, he allowed a single to Paco Figueroa and walked Michael Spidale and Matt Rizzotti to load the bases. Brent Clevlen, signed just two days ago by Philadelphia, ripped a bases-clearing double off the right field fence to give the R-Phils a 3-0 lead.

Binghamton had a quick response. Reading starter Joe Esposito retired the first six he faced before Raul Reyes greeted him with a solo home run to start the third. Reyes' blast, his ninth of the year, clanged off the light tower beyond the fence and cut the deficit to two.

Reading doubled their advantage in the very next inning. Tim Kennelly led off with a double and Fidel Hernandez walked. Following Esposito's sac bunt, Ozzie Chavez plated one with a single and Figueroa brought home another on a sac fly to make it 5-1.

Rhiner Cruz took over in the fifth and walked the first man he faced in Rizzotti. The free pass would come back to bite the righty when Rizzotti advanced to third and later scored on Kennelly's ground out. Five of the eight walks handed out by the B-Mets pitching staff came around to score in tonight's game.

With a five-run cushion, Esposito made it to the sixth before falling into trouble. He walked Jordany Valdespin and Reese Havens before fanning Brahiam Maldonado for the second out of the inning. Jake Diekman was called in from the pen, and allowed both inherited runners to score on Allan Dykstra's single to left field.

The B-Mets had two more golden opportunities to claw back, but could not come through with the clutch hit. They used an error and two walks from Diekman to load the bases in the seventh. Reading manager Mark Parent called upon Les Waldron from the pen. The southpaw struck out Matt den Dekker and induced Jordany Valdespin to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Binghamton loaded the bases again in the eighth inning, but Waldron battled back to strike out Kai Gronauer to the end the inning and the threat.

After the R-Phils added a run off Cruz in the seventh, Brent Clevlen capped a four-hit, five-RBI night with a two-run double off Brad Holt in the eight.

Justin Friend took the mound in the ninth. The right-hander worked a perfect inning to make a winner of Esposito for the fifth time this season. Carson was saddled with his team-leading tenth loss.

Binghamton (46-68) and Reading wrap up their series tomorrow night. RHP Jeurys Familia (2-3, 3.90) will take on RHP Tyson Brummett (3-5, 3.44) with first pitch set for 6:35pm. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
