Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Jonathon Niese threw five shutout innings and Mike Carp homered to help the Binghamton Mets to a 2-0 win over the Trenton Thunder on Opening Night of the Eastern League season.

Niese (1-0) was superb in his Double-A debut, allowing only a Reegie Corona walk in the third and a Jose Tabata single in the fourth. The lefty struck out five. Carp's longball to left off southpaw Chase Wright (0-1) in the second got Binghamton on the board. The B-Mets (1-0) added an insurance run in the third when Jose Coronado singled and moved to second on Ambiorix Concepcion's single before advancing on two groundouts, the last of which, by Emmanuel Garcia, brought him home.

Trenton (0-1) also managed just one hit off the Binghamton bullpen as Salvador Aguilar, Eddie Camacho and Eddie Kunz kept the shutout going. Kunz worked around a baserunner in the ninth for his first save.

Friday, the B-Mets take on Trenton in the second game of the four-game series. Bobby Parnell gets the start for Binghamton against Trenton's Dan McCutchen. Game time is 7:05 with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:35 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: The B-Mets are now 11-6 in season openers, including a 6-3 record when they open the year at home...it was the third Opening Night shutout win for the B-Mets (also 3-0 vs. AKR in 2006 and 1-0 @ Norwich in 2003)...Carp hit just one of his 11 B-Mets home runs in 2007 off lefties.
