Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
ALTOONA, PA - Aderlin Rodriguez belted a pair of solo homers and the Binghamton Mets took advantage of two Curve errors in a three-run eighth to defeat Altoona, 5-3, on Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Michael Conforto delivered a game-tying triple in the decisive frame to help the B-Mets avoid getting swept for the first time this season.
Trailing by one, Yeixon Ruiz started the eighth by bunting along the third base line. Reliever Yhonathan Barrios fired low to the first, allowing Ruiz to scamper all the way to third. Conforto tied the game by yanking a triple down the right-field line for his first Double-A hit.
With two outs and two aboard later in the inning, Eudy Pina sent a roller to short, Gift Ngoepe charged, but booted the grounder, allowing the go-ahead to run to score. Barrios capped the rocky frame for the Curve by balking in a run.
While Altoona's sloppy defense opened the door late, the B-Mets used power to take their first lead early. Rodriguez launched Zack Dodson's 1-0 pitch in the second inning over the left-field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
Rodriguez showed off his power again in the seventh. The B-Mets first baseman blasted a towering solo shot just inside the left-field foul pole to get Binghamton within one, setting the stage for the pivotal eighth inning.
B-Met starter Seth Lugo cruised to open his eighth game, retiring the first ten Curve batters he faced before walking Gift Ngoepe in the fourth. Josh Bell sent a chopper to first, but Binghamton failed to turn the double-play, keeping the inning alive for Dan Gamache. The Curve second baseman golfed Lugo's 2-0 offering over the right-field wall, giving Altoona a 2-1 lead. The Curve stretched their lead to two runs on a Stetson Allie RBI single in the sixth.
Matt Koch (3-2) tossed a perfect seventh and earned the victory thanks to Binghamton's three-run eighth. Vic Black stranded two in a scoreless eighth and Paul Sewald tossed a spotless ninth to collect his ninth save. Barrios (0-1) suffered his first blown save.
Lugo allowed three runs on five hits over six innings in the no-decision. Dodson struck out five in 6-2/3 innings and did not factor into the decision.
The B-Mets (26-24) enjoy an off day on Monday before starting a three-game series against the Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Rainy Lara takes the mound against LHP Eric Wooten. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
