Ayala Dominates Snakes

Hitless through the first seven innings the Calgary Vipers were defeated 12-4 by the Orange County Flyers before 2213 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Orange County starter Manny Ayala (3-0) was brilliant taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning and facing the minimum 21 batters at that point. Ayala finished with seven innings pitched and only two hits allowed. The Vipers gave up two runs in the first, three in the second, and seven in the seventh inning before scoring all four of their runs in the eighth. Calgary's Golden Baseball League record falls to 9-5 as they remain in second place in the North Division.

Jay Broughton (2-1) received the loss after giving up five runs in an inning and two-thirds. Out of the bullpen Brant Stickel, Berek Fasking, Claudio Galva, and infielder Dillon O'Krane all recorded scoreless innings with Stickel throwing two and a third frames.

Orange County scored right away in the top of the first inning as Steve Boggs singled, Tyler Keeble tripled in one, and Jimmy Rohan doubled in a second run for a 2-0 lead.

The Flyers added to their lead in the second as Jim Goethals walked, Keeble was hit by a pitch, Rohan and Keith Ginter singled in a run a piece, and Rohan scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh frame O.C. blew the game wide open as Ginter singled, Sergio Pedroza and David Perren walked to load the bases, Goethals plated two with single, the pitcher Ayala knocked in one with a hit, Boggs walked to again load the bases, Keeble cleared the sacks with a three-run triple, and Julian Benavidez drove in a seventh run for a 12-0 lead when he reached on an error.

Calgary got onto the scoreboard in the eighth inning as Kevin Price and Drew Miller hit back-to-back doubles for a run, Jonny Kaplan walked, and Caonabo Cosme lined a three run homer for a 12-4 score.

The Vipers now travel to Victoria for a three game series against the Seals on Tuesday June 8th, Wednesday June 9th, and Thursday June 10th all at 8:00 PM MDT.

Calgary will return home to Foothills Stadium on Saturday June 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday June 12th at 1:35 PM to take on the Seals as well.
