Tucson Toros News Release
St. George, UT - The Tucson Toros won both games of a doubleheader in St. George Saturday, beating the Roadrunners 12-6 in the opener and 4-2 in the finale.
In the first game Tucson exploded for 12 runs on 18 hits, made even more impressive when considering the game was just 7 innings due to the doubleheader. Seven Toros had multi-hit games, including Third Baseman Wally Backman Jr. who drove in four runs with a single and his first home run of the season. Righthander Brian Bannister made his first start for Tucson and was electric, striking out 6 in 5 innings of 1-run ball to earn his first victory. Bannister also helped himself at the plate with 2 hits in as many at bats leading to 2 runs scored.
The back half of the double dip had a much different complexion than the front, with pitching being the key to the contest. Lefty Cody Walden, also making his first start, earned his first win by going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just 2 runs while striking out 4. Walden lowered his ERA to 2.38 with the strong performance. Shortstop Ryan Priddy had 3 hits out of the second spot in the batting order, including a pair of doubles, and scored half of Tucson's 4 runs. Rightfielder Victor Ferrante belted his second homer of the year while driving in 3. 2009 GBL saves leader Emiliano Fruto preserved the 2-run lead with a scoreless 7th to lock down his 2nd save of the season.
The Toros will have Sunday and Monday to travel to Chico where they will take on the Outlaws for a 3-game series beginning Tuesday. Tucson's next homestand will begin with a Fireworks Friday on June 11th.
