Aviles Swats First Homer of Year, Spikes Fall to Black Bears, 5-2

GRANVILLE, W. Va.-Luis Avileshit his first home run of the season, but the State College Spikes fell to the West Virginia Black Bears, 5-2, on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Aviles's solo shot, a 394-footer to the Spikes (2-2 2ndHalf) bullpen in left field off West Virginia (4-0 2ndHalf) starterMark Faello(1-0 2ndHalf), tied the game in the second inning. It was the catcher's third as a Spike after he clubbed two in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft League season.

Ryan Guardinoknocked in the other Spikes run in the fifth with a line drive single to center for his fourth RBI of the season.

West Virginia, managed by former SpikeDavid Carpenter, took the lead on a wild pitch in the first, then used the combination of an error and aBen McClainRBI groundout to take the lead in the third. The Black Bears capped the scoring withTyler Dellerman's two-run signgle to left in the sixth.

Spikes starterJonah Jenkins(0-1 2ndHalf) took the loss after allowing three runs, two of them earned, on two hits, three walks and a hit batsman over four innings. Jenkins struck out four batters in the effort.

RelieverTy Bucknerfinished the game for State College, needing just 14 pitches to get through two scoreless innings, striking out two batters along the way.

Faello went five innings and yielded two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters for the win.Brady Choban(1) allowed a walk, but no runs, while striking out two batters for the save.

Thursday, the Spikes take on the Black Bears in the finale of their three-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. State College will send left-handerJacob Myer(0-0 2ndHalf) to the mound against West Virginia leftyWill Sandy(0-0 2ndHalf).
