Aviators Swept in Extra Inning Thriller, 13-12

May 20, 2007 - American Association (AA) - Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

Cohen Stadium, El Paso - El Paso centerfielder Kory Drew scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Juan Camacho to give the Diablos a 13-12 victory in 11 innings over the Coastal Bend Aviators Sunday night. The win completed a 4 game sweep by the Diablos. Only 11 games into a 96 game season, this one may go down as the wildest contest of the year.

In a game that saw 10 pitchers used, 25 runs scored, 2 coaches ejected, and a combined 42 hits, El Paso got the scoring started with 5 in the first inning off Aviators starter Pedro Flores. Coastal Bend responded with 4 runs on 6 hits in the third. That inning, Coastal Bend skipper John Harris was ejected, leaving pitching coach David Allen as acting manager. The Aviators put up 3 more in the fifth to take the lead 7-5. After El Paso got one back in the bottom half of the inning the Aviators scored 3 more in the top of the sixth to grab a 10-6 lead. However, during that inning they saw Allen ejected for reasons not immediately known. That left the Flores, still in dugout after giving way to reliever Tim Haines, to manage the team the rest of the way.

The Diablos then used 3 hits, a walk, and a hit batsman to score 4 times in the bottom of the seventh and knot the game at 10. It stayed that way until the tenth, when the Aviators got 3 consecutive hits from J.D. Foust, Juan Figueroa, and Bryon Smith to lead 11-10. In their turn at bat, the Diablos countered with 3 straight hits to tie it at 11 and were positioned to win the game with runners at 1st and 2nd with none out. But a pop out to catcher Stephen Morales and a double play ended the threat.

Brian Fryer lead off the eleventh with a walk and a steal before 2 singles by Foust and Figueroa had the Aviator in front once again 12-11. Starter Bryan Heaston then came on for the Aviators as their 5th pitcher of the night. A lead off walk to El Paso shortshop Albenis Machado and a single by Drew set the table for the red hot Jorge Alvarez who tied the game at 12 with a single, his 5th hit of the game. That left runners at the corners when Drew hit his sacrifice fly to win it 13-12.

With the loss, Coastal Bend falls to 4-7. El Paso improves to 8-2. The Aviators hope to get back in the win column Tuesday night as they open a 3 game series at Fairgrounds Field against the Shreveport Sports. Game time is 7:05pm and can be heard on KOPY 1070 AM.
