St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 20, 2007) - The weather at Midway Stadium on Sunday afternoon was just like the play on the field, neither were very pretty as the St. Paul Saints lost to the St. Joseph Blacksnakes 7-5 in front of 4,164.
The Saints defense committed five errors, including three in one inning, which resulted in three unearned runs and proved to be the difference in the ballgame. With the Saints leading 4-2 in the third the folly of errors began. With one out Curt Miaso reached on a walk and that was followed by two errors on one play from Saints secondbaseman Ryan Priddy. He kicked a ground ball allowing Dustin Yount to reach first and then Priddy's throw to first went awry allowing Miaso to reach third. Chad Sosebee followed with an RBI double and with two outs Eric Padilla reached on a throwing error by shortstop Brian Sprout allowing another run to score, tying the game at four.
In the top of the fourth the Blacksnakes took a 5-4 lead when Andy Wilson walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Billy Cox. Miaso followed with an RBI single.
The Saints tied the game in the fifth without the aid of a hit. Sprout's grounder to short was kicked by Miaso allowing Sprout to go all the way to second. He moved to third on a foul out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Josue Lopez.
The Blacksnakes put the game away in the seventh on four singles, the final two driving in runs without getting out of the infield. Adam Balkan's infield single to short and David Fowler's single to third plated the two runs.
The Saints put runners at first and second with one out in the ninth, but Tim Vasquez came in to close the game getting Marcel Longmire to pop out to short and Sprout to fly out to left.
Blacksnakes reliever Kellen Raab settled things down after starter David Glick struggled for the first three innings, hurling 5.1 innings allowing one unearned run on two hits while walking two and striking out seven.
The Saints have Monday off and head to Sioux City to take on the Explorers on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Jake Postlewait (2-0, 0.00) to the mound. The game can be heard on KBGY 107.5 FM.
