Avalanche select Elliott in second round

The Colorado Avalanche selected Saskatoon Blades defenseman Stefan Elliott with the nineteenth pick of the 2nd round (49th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal today.

Elliott, a native of North Vancouver, BC, just completed his second full season with the Blades, scoring 16 goals to go along with 39 assists for 55 points and 26 penalty minutes in 71 games played. In 7 playoff games, Elliott had one goal and 3 assists for 4 points and 4 penalty minutes.

He joins an Avalanche team that finished 2008-09 5th in the Northwest Division and 28th overall in the NHL. Previously in the 2009 NHL Draft, the Avalanche selected forward Matt Duchene in the 1st round, 4th overall and forward Ryan O'Reilly in the 2nd round, 33rd overall.

The 18-year-old defenseman came to the Blades in a trade prior to the 2006-07 season from the Prince George Cougars along with a 1st round Bantam Draft pick in exchange for Devin Setoguchi, now a member of the San Jose Sharks. Recently, Elliott became the first player in Blades history named the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year and subsequently, the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year.
