
Avalanche assigns first wave of Lock Monsters

LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League were assigned their first players for 2005-06 Training Camp, which begins on Sunday, September 25th. The Colorado Avalanche sent goaltenders Tom Lawson and Tyler Weiman, defensemen Mitch Love, Tomas Slovak and Mikko Viitanen and wingers Daniel DaSilva and Frantisek Skladany.
Of those assigned, Lawson, Skladany, Slovak and Viitanen all competed last season with the Hershey Bears, Colorado's AHL affiliate a season ago. Lawson compiled a 10-14-0 record with the Bears, with a 2.84 GAA and a..914 save percentage. He has a 2.55 GAA and..924 save percentage in 60 career games in the AHL and an 11-1 career playoff record. Skladany and Slovak are both Slovakia natives. Skladany split the season between Hershey (15 games, 0 points) and Quad City in the United Hockey League (50 games, 9g+11a=20pts). He suited up for Boston University for four seasons and was a 2000-01 Hockey East All-Academic Team selection. Slovak appeared in just one AHL game in 2004-05, opting to spend the majority of the season playing in the Slovakian elite league. He skated in 42 AHL games in 2003-04 (3g+8a=11pts). Viitanen had one assist in 22 AHL games last season and 42 of his 141 career games as a pro in North America have come in the AHL.
Weiman had an accomplished rookie season in the pro ranks in 2004-05, claiming the Rookie of the Year and Most Outstanding Goaltender awards in the Central Hockey League with the Colorado Eagles. He compiled a 33-6-5 record in the regular season, setting league records for GAA (1.80), save percentage (.938) and shutouts (8), and helped lead the Eagles to the CHL Championship.
DaSilva and Love come to training camp as rookies from the junior ranks of the Western Hockey League. DaSilva led the Portland Winter Hawks in goals in each of the last two seasons and led the team in points in 2004-05. Love has racked up 901 minutes in penalties in his five-year career in the WHL.
