Published on April 10, 2009 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
NEW YORK, April 10, 2009 - Quin Snyder, the head coach of the Austin Toros, was today named the winner of the Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year award as voted by his fellow NBA Development League head coaches. Bobby Sharma, NBA D-League Vice President and General Counsel will present Snyder with the award prior to the Toros' final home game at the Austin Convention Center tonight.
"Under Quin's guidance, Austin has remained one of the top teams all season," said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. "His preparation, organization, and knowledge of the game make him a tremendous asset to Austin, and the League. He is committed to teaching players to play the game the right way, and he takes a keen interest in their skill development on the basketball court."
The award is named in honor of the late Dennis Johnson, NBA legend and former Austin Toros head coach. In his playing career, Johnson won three NBA titles with the Boston Celtics and Seattle SuperSonics, played in five NBA All-Star games and was named to the All-Defensive First Team six times. He served as interim head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2002 and was in his third season coaching in the NBA D-League when he passed away.
In his second season as head coach, Snyder has led the Toros to a back-to-back 30-win seasons, coached in the 2009 NBA D-League All-Star Game in Phoenix and guided GATORADE Call-Ups Malik Hairston, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, DeMarcus Nelson and Marcus Williams
"This is a well-deserved honor for Coach Snyder," said RC Buford, president of sports franchises for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. "During his time with the Toros he has done a great job developing young players, teaching the skills needed to jump from the D-League to the NBA, while also putting a competitive team on the court night after night. The success that Quin has enjoyed in Austin is vital to the Spurs organization. We are thrilled that he has been recognized for his hard-work and dedication."
