Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX March 16, 2011 - The Austin Toros will host Military Appreciation Day presented by Scott & White on Saturday, March 26 at noon at Cedar Park Center. Over 1,000 tickets to Saturday's game versus the Idaho Stampede have been donated to Central Texas veterans and military associations in honor of their sacrifice and service to our country. The Toros will play in camouflage uniforms that will be auctioned during the game with the proceeds benefitting Homefront Services. Homefront Services provides individual, family, and group counseling to those who served and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The Austin Toros are proud to host our service men and women at our annual Military Appreciation game," said Peter Lubell, Toros Chief Operating Officer. "We hope that everyone who has served or has family that is currently serving our country will come out and support our troops."
Saturday's game will include a number of events recognizing retired and active military, and the associations that support them. Events include a pre-game moment of silence for Gold Star families who have lost loved ones due to war and a plaque presentation from the Military Moms of Texas to the Texas Association of Vietnam Veterans in honor of their service.
The Texas Association of Vietnam Veterans will display a monument maquette of the Texas Capital Vietnam War Monument in an effort to raise awareness of their one million dollar fundraising goal. The monument features five men on a pedestal, positioned in a circle and holding weapons. The figures are meant to represent the racial and ethnic diversity of the people who fought in the war. Other military associations in attendance will include: Soldiers Angels, Heroes Night Out, National Guard, and Camp Mabry.
The Toros encourage families and friends who have loved ones currently serving in the military to bring a poster with the name of the individual and their branch of service to the game. Retired and active military who wear their uniforms or show military identification will receive a free ticket at the door.
Individual and group tickets to the Toros final five regular season home games may be purchased by calling (512) 236-8333, visiting austintoros.com or ticketmaster.com.
The Toros take on the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19 at RGV in a fight for a playoff position. Fans can watch away games live at NBA Futurecast.com.
