Austin FC Draws FC Dallas, Claims 2022 Copa Tejas
July 17, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS - Diego Fagundez's 79th-minute strike saw Austin FC come back to earn a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas. The result extends Austin FC's unbeaten streak to seven matches and clinches the 2022 Copa Tejas for the Club, a supporter-created trophy awarded to the team with the most points from intra-Texas matches in a season.
Both sides hit the woodwork inside the opening 25 minutes, with Sebastián Driussi seeing his curling strike glance off the crossbar. Dallas would then open the scoring three minutes before halftime when Arriola finished from close range.
In the second half, the Verde & Black dominated possession as the hosts looked to protect their lead, but Austin finally found its breakthrough with 11 minutes remaining. Felipe picked out Sebastián Driussi with a clever pass, who moved the ball along to a wide-open Fagundez. The midfielder kept his cool and beat Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes to level the score and give Driussi his league-leading 17th goal contribution of the season.
Though Austin created a handful of late chances to win the match, the score ended level and the sides shared the points. The Verde & Black have now come from behind to earn a league-best 16 points (four wins, four draws) in 2022.
