Aulie Named Player Of The Month
March 1, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - A former first round draft choice of the Brandon Wheat Kings has been chosen the Tip Top Tailors Player of the Month for February.
18-year defenceman Keith Aulie, who was the Wheat Kings' first round selection (11th overall) in the 2004 Western Hockey League bantam draft, joins rookies Matt Calvert and Brayden Schenn as well as veterans Nathan Green and Tyler Dittmer as this year's recipients during the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League regular season.
In fourteen games last month, the 6'6" 218 lb native of Rouleau, Saskatchewan, the former Notre Dame Hound had two goals, 3 points and 21 minutes in penalties. One of his two goals turned out to be an overtime game winner against the defending Memorial Cup Champion Giants in Vancouver. Aulie's other highlight last month came on February 1st when he registered a career high +6 during a 9-0 victory over the Red Deer Rebels. Overall, he was +7 in February.
One of only four Wheat Kings to play in all 64 games this season, Aulie is the only member of Brandon's defensive corps to dress for every game, providing the hockey club with a steadying influence on the blueline.
Entering Saturday night's game against the visiting Calgary Hitmen at Westman Communications Group Place, Aulie has career highs in goals (5), assists (12) and points (17). During his three year WHL career, he has six goals, 29 points and 187 penalty minutes in 168 regular season games.
In recognition of the monthly honour, Aulie will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings during the club's game against the visiting Hitmen Saturday night.
On the ice, the Wheat Kings will be hoping to run their modest winning streak to three games Saturday night when they close out a pivotal 6-game home stand against the Hitmen. Brandon is coming off Friday night's 4-0 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes, giving the Wheat Kings four wins during the first 5 games of this home stand. Rookies Brayden Schenn and Scott Glennie had a goal and an assist in a winning effort while 18-year old Winnipeg product Joe Caligiuri turned aside 26 shots in posting his 4th shutout of the season. With Friday's shutout, Caligiuri moved into a tie with Jomar Cruz for 8th place on the club's all time list.
Tickets to Saturday's game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
