SEAWOLVES SINK SEA DOGS - The Portland Sea Dogs fell to the Erie SeaWolves last night, 9-5. Daniel Cabrera led off the first inning with a single and Andrew Navigato doubled, putting runners at second and third. Parker Meadows lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Cabrera, giving the SeaWolves a 1-0 lead. Quincy Nieporte reached on an infield single, driving in Navigato to increase their lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the first, David Hamilton walked and advanced to second on his 50th steal of the season. Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out to second base, executing the hit and run, scoring Hamilton to bring the lead down to one run, 2-1. In the fifth, Nieporte drove in the first run with an RBI single and Dillon Dingler pushed in the second run with a bases-loaded walk. Dane Myers scored a run on an RBI groundout and Gage Workman capped off the inning with a run-scoring infield single, making it a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning with one out, Izzy Wilson homered to right-center. It was his sixth of the season and made it a 6-2 game. Erie answered with a run of their own in the top of the sixth. Navigato singled and Meadows walked. Nieporte flied out to right, moving Navigato up to third. In the next at-bat, Meadows stole second, drawing an errant throw from Sea Dogs catcher Elih Marrero and bringing in Navigato from third, making it 7-2. Binelas launched a two-run homer to right-center in the seventh and brought Portland within three runs, 7-4. In the eighth inning with one out, Nieporte drove in another run, this time with a solo shot to right field and expanded the SeaWolves lead to 8-4. Both teams traded runs in the ninth inning. Michael D La Cruz walked, and Gage Workman drove him in with a triple, adding to the SeaWolves lead 9-4. In the bottom of the ninth, Christian Koss led off with a walk. Two outs later, Nick Northcut doubled down the left field line, scoring Koss. That was all the offense the Sea Dogs could muster, losing to the SeaWolves 9-5.

WELCOME TO THE RED SOX - Outfielder Wilyer Abreu was added to Portland's roster prior to yesterday's game. Abreu was acquired in a trade with the Houston Astros to the Boston Red Sox with infielder Enmanuel Valdez for catcher Christian Vasquez during this year's Trade Deadline on August 2nd. He has had a strong season at the plate and recorded a 10-game hitting streak July 8th to July 24th with the Corpus Christi Hooks (Double-A, Houston Astros). He tied career-high four hits and career-high 6 RBI July 14th vs Northwest Arkansas with 2 doubles and one home run.

FOUR-IN-A-ROW - With another loss last night, the Sea Dogs have now lost four-straight, their longest losing streak since June. Between June 7th and 14th, Portland lost seven straight games, their longest losing streak of the season.

BACK IN THE 90'S - The Portland Sea Dogs will be donning their throwback teal jerseys tonight paying homage to arguably one of the best decades in American history. During the 1990's, the Sea Dogs went 439-410 as a Marlins affiliate, before their affiliation change to the Boston Red Sox. During a year when fans were tempted to stay home to watch George Clooney star in ER, Kevin Millar was tearing up the Eastern League batting .342 with 32 home runs and 131 RBI for the Sea Dogs in 1997. Despite movie theaters beckoning fans with blockbusters such as Titanic, Jurassic Park and Men in Black, Mainers were still coming out in record fashion to catch other Sea Dogs such as Mark Kotsay who was hitting .306 for Portland.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - August 4, 1998 - Ramon Castro hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Sea Dogs a 4-3 win over New Haven.

PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Thaddeus Ward is set to make his 2022 debut with the Sea Dogs tonight. He last pitched on a rehab assignment with the Greenville Drive July 29th vs the Bowling Green Hot Rods and tossed 4.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out three. Ward attended Major League Spring Training camp with the Sox as a non-roster invitee, his first big league camp in 2021. Last season, he made two starts with Double-A Portland, his most advanced level, before being placed on the Injured List with a forearm strain on May 19th then underwent Tommy John surgery on June 3rd and missed the remainder of the season.
