Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack continued to roll on Friday night, securing their twelfth win in the last thirteen games. Although in the early going it seemed it would be a run away for the Attack, the Guelph Storm had a different idea. The Storm took the lead with minutes to go, but the Attack were able to score a late goal in the third and the winner in overtime to take a 7-6 victory.

For the second straight game a pair of Attack players combined for 6 points with Jonah Gadjovich tallying two goals and an assist, while Nick Suzuki scored one goal and added two helpers.

The Attack opened what turned into a frantic first period with a record setting opening goal. Jonah Gadjovich opening the scoring just 10 seconds into the game, potting a Nick Suzuki pass behind the Guelph Storms Anthony Popovich. Just over two minutes later Gadjovich would get his second of the night banging home the rebound off a hard shot from the point from Igor Chibrikov.

Just over a minute later the Storm cut the Attack lead in half when Alexey Toropchenko netted his 14th of the season. The offensive outburst continue seven minutes later when Kevin Hancock converted his 20th of the season, restoring the two goal lead. The Attacks Maksim Sushko and Storm's Liam Hawel exchange goals to finish off the period, with the Attack heading into the break with a 4-3 lead.

After a offensive first period, the teams came out a little more cautious in the second, with neither team registering a shot in the first 5 minutes. However, once again it was the Attack finding the back of the net on their first shot of the period when Nick Suzuki and Kevin Hancock executed a little give and go play to open up some space. Suzuki drove to the net, slipping it short side on Popovich to increase the Attack lead to 5-3.

Much like the first period, it didn't take long for the Storm to cut the lead in half when Isaac Ratcliffe was the beneficiary of a bouncing puck in front of the Attack net. Ratcliffe tapped it into the empty cage bring the score to 5-4.

The teams exchanged powerplay opportunities in the second half of the period with neither team able to capitalize. The teams headed into the second intermission with the Attack holding a 5-4 lead.

The third period began with the Attack taking a string off penalties, but fortunately it was the Attack that had the best scoring chances while on the penalty kill. The two teams pressured each other for short periods throughout the middle of the period with limited chances being generated.

With a little under 5 minutes left, it was the Storm's Hawel who notched his second of the game tying the score at five. Two and half minutes later Zach Poirier stepped over the blue line and snuck a shot below the glove of Olivier Lafreniere, giving Guelph their first lead of the game. The Attack did not show any quit, generating some opportunities late. With Lafreniere out of the net, the Attack won a draw in the Guelph end and quickly cycled the puck back to Aidan Dudas who blasted a shot from the top of the circle to tie the game with 30 seconds to go. Regulation ended in a 6-6 tie.

In overtime, the teams once again exchanged a couple of chances before the Attack were sent to a power play when Dmitri Samorukov took down Ethan Szypula in front of the Guelph net. The Attack had their chances during the power play, but were unable to convert. Shortly after the penalty to Guelph expired, Markus Phillips stepped over the line and fired a hard shot on Popovich that slipped through his pads into the back of the net, securing the Attack a 7-6 win.

The Attack will then return to the Bayshore for Saturday night's inaugural REACH, Shoot.Score game against the Peterborough Petes in support of the REACH Centre of Grey/Bruce.

The game will see the Attack wear special jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game with all proceeds going to the REACH Centre, as well as a silent auction, a Chuck A Puck, and a bucket pass.

They will then finish the weekend off with a Core Partners Investment Planning Counsel Sunday afternoon game against the Barrie Colts. Don't forget you can skate with the team following the game. All adults must have a pair of skates, while any child under the age of 16 must be wearing skates and a helmet.
