Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack Hockey Club and players have joined forces with the Canadian Cancer Society to FIGHT BACK AGAINST CANCER a NEW event being held on March 6, 2010 at the Harry Lumley Community Centre.
The afternoon events will include the Attack Players shaving their heads as a Kick off to Cops for Cancer, the signature event for the Bluewater Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society. In 2010 Cops for Cancer will be kicking off its 14th year in Grey and Bruce. Today the Cops for Cancer campaign is one of the most successful Canadian Cancer Society events in all of Ontario. The people of Grey and Bruce counties have taken the campaign to heart. In the past 13 years, area events have raised over $2.3 million dollars! Each year it gets better and better; in some cases entire communities turn out for their community's event.
The Attack players have decided to help with the fundraising by receiving pledges during game nights as well as on-line, all funds raised will be designated to children's cancer research. To sponsor the team go http://convio.cancer.ca/site/TR/CopsforCancer/COPS_ON_even_?team_id=184080 &pg=team&fr_id=7121 or stop by the Attack box office to make your donation. All donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt for the 2010 tax year.
"The guys are really looking forward to growing their hair out for this popular event, they just want to give back and with the proceeds going to children's cancer research it was the perfect opportunity," says Brent Fisher, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Attack. "We just hope we can pack the event with people from all over Grey and Bruce, it will be an awesome day."
The afternoon festivities will include the Attack Player head shaves, a silent auction and autograph session. During the evening the Attack host Erie for a 7:30 p.m. start time with the Chuck A Puck contest being held during the 2nd intermission.
"We are always working hard to find something new and fun for Owen Sound, this year we are introducing a Chuck A Puck skills competition," says Jennifer Wright, Fundraising Coordinator with the Society. "We really wanted people from Owen Sound to come out to not only enjoy the awesome hockey that the Attack play but to add an event to raise money for cancer. It's easy, it's fun and everyone can play." There will be 1600 pucks available for purchase and will sell for $2 each or 3 pucks for $5. During the 2nd intermission of the game puck purchasers will be asked to toss their pucks into centre ice, towards the buckets. Each bucket will contain one prize, in order to win the puck must land either in the bucket or be closest to the bucket. All pucks will be numbered and recorded with the purchaser's name. All the money raised from the "Chuck a Puck" will be designated to the transportation program with the society.
The game against Erie starts at 7:30p.m. Ticket prices are $15.50 for adults, $14.50 for seniors, $13.50 for youth and kids under 13 are $8 or go online to attackhockey.com for more information call (519) 371-7452.
"We are excited to see how it goes, we wanted an entire day dedicated to raising money for cancer," says Wright. "This way we are able to bring awareness to the cause as well as raise money for cancer." With the new www.fightback.ca website recently launched by the Canadian Cancer Society we felt it fit well with what we were trying to accomplish.
