
OHL Announces Academic Players Of The Month

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for December.
West Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for December in the West Division is right winger Trevor Morbeck of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Morbeck, 16, a native of Jackson, Wisconsin currently is a Grade 11 student at Bawating C&V in Sault Ste. Marie. "Trevor has earned an average of 80% over his 4 courses. He has exceptional performance for a first year player," commented Greyhound Academic Advisor Jerry Bumbacco.
Midwest Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for December in the Midwest Division is goaltender Michael Houser of the London Knights. Houser, 17, a native of Wexford, Pennsylvania currently is a Grade 12 student at Saunders High School in London. "Michael has adjusted nicely, both on the ice and in classroom during his first year in the OHL. He currently carries an 80% average while taking university prep courses," commented Rob Waugh, Academic Advisor for the Knights.
Central Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for December in the Central Division is centre Kristoff Kontos of the Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club. Kontos, 16, a native of Penetang, Ontario is a Grade 11 student at Lasalle Secondary School in Sudbury. Wolves Academic Advisor Gord Ewin had this to say about Kristoff, "Kristoff is a diligent worker in the classroom and maintains an 80% average. He is a mature young man and will be very successful." Kontos was the Wolves 2nd Round Selection in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.
East Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for December in the East Division is defenseman Cody Ceci of the Ottawa 67's. Ceci, 16, a native of Orleans, Ontario, is currently attending St. Peter Catholic High School in Orleans. "Cody is a high achiever who is taking a full course load in his first year in the OHL," commented Theresa Kelly, Academic Advisor for the 67's. Ceci was the 67's 1st Round Selection in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection and a member of Team Ontario Under 17.
OHL Academic Highlights:
* OHL players successfully completed 97% of high school courses during the 2008-09 season.
* This season the OHL awarded a record 355 Academic Scholarships including 164 to current players and 191 graduated players.
* Of the 54 overage players that competed in the league during the 2008-09 season, 24 have signed professional hockey contracts while 30 have accessed their academic scholarships in 2009-10 at various institutions across North America.
* OHL teams contributed just under $2 million in 2008-09 towards scholarships for current and graduate players.
