Attack Fall 6-4 to the Firebirds

A late push wasn't enough for the Owen Sound Attack as they fell 6-4 tonight to the Flint Firebirds.

The five-game road trip neared its end tonight in Flint, as the Attack headed south to meet the Firebirds for the fourth and final time this season. Through three games, Owen Sound have collected 5 of a possible 6 points, and they aimed to make it 7 of 8 on Wednesday night.

The Firebirds had other ideas and continued their strong late season, potting the first goal of the game just 4:47 into the period after Kyle Harris collected a rebound in front of the net and put it past an outstretched Andrew MacLean. Owen Sound had chances to tie it up, including a power play opportunity, but they couldn't beat Luke Cavallin and would head to the first intermission with work to do, trailing Flint 1-0.

The second period started with back and forth action between the two teams as they would combine for four goals. Maksim Sushko got things started after making a great play driving to the net. The Firebirds answered back just minutes later when Jacob Winterton struck shorthanded to restore the Flint lead. Aidan Dudas scored a highlight reel goal, shooting a puck past Cavallin for his 25th of the season while falling to the ice. Ty Dellandrea scored a play of the night effort himself and Flint would have a 3-2 lead heading to the final frame.

Owen Sound entered the final period hoping to erase Flint's lead, but after a turnover in the Attack zone Flint capitalized and gave themselves a two-goal lead with 17 minutes remaining. The Bears weren't discouraged and continued to battle, when Kirwin made a great move through the slot where his shot was deflected by Griffin Wilson and into the Firebirds net. The goals started coming quick with Flint responding less than a minute later, and Brady Lyle scoring his 10th of the year 30 seconds later to cut the lead to 1, making it a 5-4 game. The Attack couldn't find the back of the net with the goalie pulled and the Firebirds would win in regulation after adding an empty netter, 6-4.

Aidan Dudas was the Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game. The Mac Taylor Corporation three stars were swept by Flint, with Emmet Pierce, Ty Dellandrea and Ethan Keppen claiming the honours.

The Owen Sound Attack will be back in action tomorrow night as they visit the Windsor Spitfires at the WFCU Centre. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
