Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack didn't start off 2016 the way they wanted.
Hosting the Mississauga Steelheads in a New Year's Day matinee, the Attak found themselves the victims of a three goal 2nd period by the visitors en route to losing 3-1 to the visitors.
The Steelheads were led to the win by former Attack goalkeeper Jack Flinn, who turned aside 40 of 41 shots he faced on the day.
Kevin Hancock scored the lone goal for the Attack in the loss.
A scoreless first period for the Attack and Steelheads was largely due to the goaltending on both sides.
Owen Sound netminder Daniel Dekoning turned aside all nine shots, including a stellar glove save late in the frame, he faced. Mississauga's Flinn wasn't to be outdone though, making saves on all 11 pucks the Attack put on net in the first 20 minutes of play.
Scoring would happen though, and it would be the visitors who found the back of the net first.
Just 3:38 into the 2nd period, Mississauga's Jason Smith fired a wrister from the slot that beat a screened Dekoning through the fivehole.
The Attack wasted no time in responding though.
With only 1:11 having elapsed after Mississauga's goal, Josh Sterk found a streaking Kevin Hancock who wired a snapshot over the outstretched glove of Jack Flinn to tie the game at one-apiece. Josh STerk also assisted on the play, which was Hancock's 3rd goal of the year.
After a slow start to the game, the 2nd period saw goals come fast and furious.
Mississauga would retake a one-goal lead at 7:25 of the frame after Daniel Muzito-Bagenda caused a turnover in the Owen Sound end and was able to backhand it into the Attack cage.
The Steelheads continued to pile on, going up by a pair on a howitzer of a shot by Nicholas Hague at the 10:46 mark of the 2nd, just after a successful Paul Davis Systems Penalty Kill by the Attack.
Hague's goal would prove to be the last tally of the afternoon as the Attack were unable to generate anything in the game's final 20 minutes despite outshooting the visitors 14-3 in the frame.
Flinn was named the Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the game after turning aside all but one shot he faced on the afternoon. Mississauga's Daniel Muzito-Bagenda earned 2nd star honours, while Owen Sound's Kevin Hancock was the 3rd star of the afternoon.
Jacob Friend was named the Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the game.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 41-20 for the Attack.
The Attack are right back in action on Saturday, Jan. 2 when the visiting Oshawa Generals come to town for a 7:30pm game.
Tickets are available at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.
