ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 16, 2003) – The Atlantic City Surf and AtlantiCare have announced a special initiative aimed at promoting children's use of helmets while bicycling, skateboarding and participating in other sports that have the potential for head injury.

Local Police officers, including bicycle and community patrol representatives joined AtlantiCare and the Surf during a press conference prior to the July 16 Road Warriors-Surf game at the Sandcastle to announce the initiative.

Through the program, AtlantiCare and the Surf will partner with the police departments to promote helmet safety. When police see children wearing helmets, they will reward the children by giving them one coupon redeemable for one free children's admission to a Surf game during the 2003 season.

Participating police departmens are Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ventnor, Longport, Margate, Ocean City, Somers Point, Pleasantville, Northfield, Linwood, Absecon, Galloway, Egg Harbor Township, Hamilton Township (Atlantic County), Egg Harbor City and Hammonton. Each police department received 40 coupons to distribute to children they see wearing helmets.

"We're pleased to partner with AtlantiCare for this wonderful safety initiative," said Surf general manager Mario Perrucci. "Baseball players and police are often role models for children. We're thrilled that so many local police departments recognized the importance of this project and were willing to join us in promoting helmet safety among children.

"In 2002, Atlantic City Medical Center treated more than 286 patients as a result of bicycle injuries," said Margaret Belfeild, administrator of ACMC City Division (AtlantiCare is the parent company of ACMC). "I cannot stress enough that helmets save lives. It breaks our hearts whenever a child is injured. It is even more disturbing when a child has a potentially life-altering head injury, especially when it could have been avoided through use of a helmet."

"AtlantiCare joins the Surf in thanking the 16 area police departments who are joining with us in this wonderful safety initiative," said Belfield. "Preventing head injuries and rewarding children for the smart decision to wear a helmet will make a positive difference in the health of our communities."
