Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
WALDORF, MD -Patrick Osborn, the manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs since the 2011 season, has accepted a position to manage one of the New York Yankees Gulf Coast League teams, the Blue Crabs announced today.
The Bakersfield, California native, who played nine seasons of professional baseball before taking over as manager of the Blue Crabs in 2011, will take the next step in his pursuit of managing in the Major Leagues.
"I can't thank The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and The Atlantic League enough for the opportunity to start my managerial career within such a great environment," Osborn said. "The guidance, support, and professionalism has been second to none. The Southern Maryland community has impacted my life as well as my baseball career in ways I never imagined. I'm looking forward to this next step as I try to rise to the pinnacle of baseball."
"A big part of our job is to assist our on-field personnel in pursuing their dreams of making it to the Major Leagues," Blue Crabs General Manager Patrick Day said. "Patrick and The Atlantic League assists players in getting back to Major League organizations every summer, now it's his turn. Our organization has always believed that he will someday be a Major League manager. We are excited for him and wish him all the best."
The Blue Crabs have launched a national search to find the next manager to guide the franchise into the future.
Named the second manager in franchise history following Butch Hobson, Osborn, 33, led the Blue Crabs to a 65-74 record in 2013, including securing a post season berth, for the third consecutive season, after winning the 2013 Liberty Division First Half Title.
Osborn was originally selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 2002 draft. He was drafted out of the University of Florida where he played three years for the Gators. In his final season at Florida in 2002, Osborn started all 65 games and led the team with 104 hits and a .414 average. He also had 17 home runs and 76 RBIs for the Gators that year.
Osborn spent six years (2002-07) in the Indians organization, reaching as high as Double-A Akron. He then signed with the newly developed Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League prior to the 2008 season and has been with the organization ever since.
The Blue Crabs play 140 regular season games in the Atlantic League, considered the highest level of Minor League Baseball. Atlantic League players are "Major League ready" and in the last 15 years, over 600 players have graduated from Atlantic League clubs to Major League organizations, making the League a preferred route for experienced players to be scouted by Major League Baseball. The Blue Crabs play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. The franchise will look to open its 7th season on Thursday, April 24, 2014.
