Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Barnstormers had a chance to knock Atlantic City out of the race. They didn?t accomplish it, and now, the Surf ballclub is very much in the hunt.

Andy High and a pair of relievers combined on a four-hitter as Atlantic City took the finale of the weeklong series between the two clubs, 3-2, Thursday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium.

Lancaster?s lead over the Surf has been trimmed to 3 ? games. Atlantic City now holds the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the first half series, 5-4.

The Surf built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings off Andy Zwirchitz (4-4). Demetrius Heath doubled over the head of right fielder Jutt Hileman to lead off the first. Raul Marval followed with a bunt to third which was fumbled by Steve Van Note, putting runners at the corners. Zwirchitz struck out Clyde Williams and got ahead on Todd Leathers. Marval took off for second and was tagged out, but Heath snuck home, beating Travis Hake?s return throw for a 1-0 lead.

Ozzie Timmons singled with one out in the second, and Gary Johnson followed with a walk. Zwirchitz, who held the Surf to four hits in seven innings, made his biggest mistake of the night, committing a balk, moving the runners into scoring position. Dusty Maddox lined to left for the second out with the runners holding, but Melvin Rosario dumped an 0-1 pitch into shallow left, scoring both runners for a 3-0 edge.

The Surf did not get another runner safely beyond first base and left only one runner aboard in the entire game. Quincy Foster threw one man out at second, and Lance Burkhart nailed two more base stealers before the night ended.

Lancaster spun its wheels all night against High (4-1) and the relief corps. The Barnstormers left two runners on base in the first, second and sixth innings before finally breaking through in the seventh against Rob Corrado. Danny Gonzalez reached on an error and moved to second on a one-out walk to Chris Van Rossum. Foster located the alley in left center field, plating both runners with a double. However, the rally died there as Travis Hake lined to center, and Reggie Taylor popped to second to end the inning.

A similar scenario built in the ninth inning as Gonzalez reached on a bad hop single, and Van Rossum walked. This time, Jason DiAngelo, who entered in the eighth, struck out Foster looking and retired Hake on a grounder to third to close out the game.
