Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United lost to New York Red Bulls 3-1 Sunday night in front of 45,089 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta opened the scoring in the 26th minute from Ezequiel Barco, who scored his MLS-leading third goal in the month of May. Josef Martinez appeared to make it 2-0 minutes later, but the goal was ultimately overturned from video review. Bradley Wright-Phillips notched a second-half brace off of a pair of headers to lead Red Bulls to the win.
Atlanta scored the first goal of the match for the ninth time this season as Barco latched onto a loose ball inside of the box and beat Ryan Meara to the goalkeepers' left. Barco dribbled around a few defenders and passed to Miguel AlmirÃ"n, but continued his run into the box and had the ball land perfectly at his feet after AlmirÃ"n's shot was deflected off of a Red Bull defender.
Atlanta appeared to double its lead in the 31st minute when Josef Martinez deked around Meara after a long through ball from Julian Gressel. The play was overturned on video review as
VAR Mark Geiger ruled Martinez to have fouled Red Bulls' defender Tim Parker.
Minutes later, referee Christopher Penso called Miles Robinson on a foul inside of the box in the 40th minute. New York equalized on the ensuing kick from Daniel Royer in the 42nd minute. They took the lead in the 51st minute when Wright-Phillips made a near post run and headed a Michael Murillo cross into the back of the net. Wright-Phillips did it again just four minutes later, this time from the left side and a cross from Alejandro Romero Gamarra.
Atlanta played the final 20 minutes (plus 12 minutes of second half stoppage time) with 10 men as Greg Garza was sent off in the 71st minute for a tackle on Royer.
This upcoming weekend, Atlanta United (8-3-1, 25 points) is off for the first time in eight weeks. It returns to action against New England Revolution on Wednesday, May 30 (7:00 p.m., FS1).
