Atlanta United Announces the "Legacy Collection" Retail Line
June 12, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United today announced the Legacy Collection, a custom retail line celebrating Atlanta's rich Black culture and honoring the significance of Juneteenth. The Legacy Collection is the club's first player-led collaboration, as Atlanta United players Jay Fortune, Tristan Muyumba, Xande Silva, Caleb Wiley, Derrick Williams and former player Derrick Etienne Jr. provided insight and inspiration to guide the Atlanta United design team from ideation to production. The final collection blends history with the perspective of the players as a statement for the club and the city of Atlanta.
The collection comprises a T-shirt, sweatshirt, scarf and a Juneteenth patch which players will wear in the club's next two matches against Houston Dynamo and D.C. United. Proceeds of the collection will benefit the Black Players for Change (BPC), an organization consisting of Black players, coaches and staff from MLS, that bridges racial equity gaps across the sport of soccer and beyond. The Legacy Collection will be available Thursday, June 13 at the club's Team Store at Atlantic Station. It will be available at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium Team Store starting Saturday, June 15 during Atlanta United's home match.
"We are proud to introduce the Legacy Collection, a meaningful collaboration that celebrates Atlanta's vibrant Black culture and honors the significance of Juneteenth," said Skate Noftsinger, Atlanta United Chief Business Officer. "By working closely with our players, we have created a collection that reflects their personal experiences and heritage, ensuring that the designs are both authentic and impactful. We hope this collection not only resonates with our community in Atlanta, but also supports the vital work of Black Players for Change."
Elements featured throughout the collection include the colors red, blue and white, derived from the Juneteenth flag, and flowers from both a southern magnolia, symbolizing the history and culture of the South, and the blanket flower, native of Galveston, Texas, the birthplace of Juneteenth. Represented on the back of the shirt and sweatshirt are black players of Atlanta United who helped shape and inspire the design. Finally, the patch boldly displays the date June 19, 1865, the moment in United States history marking the emancipation and citizenship of all African Americans and a unifying reminder of the continued commitment to freedom and equality.
Cam Kirk, one of Atlanta's most notable photographers and videographers, a Morehouse alum and founder of Collective Gallery, hosted Atlanta United players at Cam Kirk Studios for the photo shoot of the Legacy Collection.
Atlanta United returns to action June 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to face Houston Dynamo (7:30 p.m., MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
