Atlanta United 2 News Release
TORONTO - Atlanta United 2 played to a scoreless draw against Toronto FC II Sunday night at York Lions Stadium. Toronto earned the extra point after a 4-3 shootout victory. Jackson Conway made his first start of the season while Jonantan Villal returned from a foot injury he suffered on April 16 against Orlando City B.
Toronto nearly found the first goal of the match in the 29th minute after a turnover in Atlanta's defensive third lead to a quick counter. Julian Altobelli received a through pass inside Atlanta's 18-yard box with Kofi Twumasi racing back to stop the attack. Altobelli took one touch and fired a left footed shot nearly deflected by Twumasi, but Sebastian Guerra was there for his first save of the night.
Atlanta found its best attack of the night in the 49th minute when David Mejía found Conway timing a run behind Toronto's backline. The pass rolled halfway inside Toronto's box before Conway one-timed his shot that was saved by Luka Gavran cutting away the angle at the near post.
In the 65th minute, Karim Tmimi nearly scored a header off a corner kick sent in by Alan Carleton. The French striker found space inside the box before rising for the header, which was saved by a diving Gavran.
Atlanta made a series of attacks in the final minutes of the match. In the 86th minute, Erik Centeno sent a cross into the box for Conway whose one touch blast with his left sailed wide. Two minutes later in the 88th, Centeno fired in another cross to Conway for the header, but Gavran was there for the diving save. The game ended in a 0-0 draw with a shootout to determine the extra point.
In the shootout, Gavran made two saves to help Toronto earn two points in the 4-3 shootout victory.
ATL UTD 2 returns home on Sunday, June 25 to host NYCFC II at Fifth Third Bank Stadium (7:30 p.m., Apple TV - MLS Season Pass). Some ATL UTD 2 matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app while the remainder of matches are streamed live on MLSNEXTPro.com.
